DECATUR, Ga. — The Texas State softball program kept its impressive start to the 2021 season intact Tuesday afternoon as the Bobcats knocked off Georgia State 6-2 and 9-0.
Texas State (19-3, 4-0) showed why it is undefeated wins this season when scoring first as seniors
Tara Oltmann and
Hailey MacKay combined to drive in three first-inning runs in the first game on the day.
With a 4-0 lead following Oltmann scoring on a grounder in the top of the third, Bobcat starting pitcher
Meagan King (5-1) retired nine of the first 11 batters she faced, before Daisy Hess scored the Panthers' lone run in the game with a solo home run to start the bottom of the fourth.
King, who tossed her first complete game on the season Tuesday, responded by setting down the next three Panther batters in order. She ended the game with a season-high four strikeouts to no walks.
Sara Vanderford led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run to make it 5-1, Bobcats, before Oltmann scored her third run of the game on a fielding error by Georgia State.
After a would-be scoring opportunity in the bottom of the sixth failed, the Panthers did manage a single run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out Bobcat fielding error.
In game two, Texas State, again, used the home run ball to earn another win.
ArieAnn Bell, who finished the second game with two home runs and four runs batted in in three official plate appearances, pushed the Bobcats ahead in the top of the second with a solo home run on a 2-2 pitch. Texas State plated three more runs in the inning when
Molly Damiani scored on a fielder's choice, before Oltmann plated two on a double to left-centerfield.
The 4-0 Texas State lead stood until the sixth inning when Vanderford hit her second solo home run in as many games. Bell pushed the Bobcat advantage to eight runs with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh.
Hannah Earls capped the scoring in the inning when the freshman scored on a wild pitch.
The Bobcat offense wasn't the only thing on fire in game two as
