Bobcats snap five-match skid with quality win at Houston

HOUSTON – Texas State knocked off Houston, The American Athletic Conference West Division Champions in four sets (25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 25-17) Saturday night at the Fertitta Center.
 
The Bobcats (28-8, 15-1 Sun Belt) snaps its five-match losing streak while handing the Cougars (12-4, 8-0 AAC) their second consecutive loss after falling to No. 6 Baylor in five sets. TXST played a well-rounded match, hitting .233 with 58 kills on 150 attacks and 23 errors, and totaled three aces, and defensively, the club registered eight blocks and had 68 digs. 
  
Junior outside hitter Janell Fitzgerald totaled a match-high 16 kills with a .324 hitting percentage and added six digs, three blocks, and a career-high two aces. Sophomore outside hitter Caitlan Buettner finished with 12 and had four digs, two assists, and two blocks, including one solo. Junior setter Emily DeWalt was one dig shy of a double-double as she collected 42 assists, landed seven kills on 19 errorless attacks (.368), and had two blocks. Junior middle blocker Jillian Slaughter led the team with five blocks, and junior libero Kayla Granado logged a career-high 24 digs in the win.  
 
Junior middle blocker Isabel Theut turned in 13 kills to lead the Cougars and was one of four players to register two blocks. Freshman setter Annie Cooke paced the offense with 30 assists, and freshman libero Sarah Martinez led the defense with 15 digs and led the team with two aces.
 
Set 1
A competitive first set featured 13 ties. Although UH scored the first three points of the match and held the lead at the media timeout, TXST took a 16-15 advantage behind a 3-1 run, highlighted by a pair of kills from Fitzgerald. The lead changed again as both teams traded points, but the Bobcats closed the set on a 5-1 run behind two solid shots from senior middle blocker Tyeranee Scott to win the set 25-22. Texas State hit .361 in the stanza behind 18 kills, and Buettner led the way with five kills, followed by four kills each from DeWalt and Fitzgerald.
 
Set 2
Texas State led wire-to-wire in the set and jumped out to a 13-8 lead thanks to a 6-2 scoring run. Houston fought and made it a one-point set twice, including a 23-22 score, but a service error by the home team followed by a kill from DeWalt gave the visiting club a 25-22 win and a 2-0 match lead. 
 
Set 3
Houston grabbed its first lead since the first set at 5-4, and although the team's continued to trade points, the Cougars scored four of the final five points heading into the media timeout to possess a 15-12 advantage. The home team continued to keep their lead and fought off a late push by the Bobcats that cut the lead to 23-21. However, a block by Theut followed by a kill from sophomore outside hitter Abbie Jackson put the Cougars on the board with a 25-21 win.
 
Set 4
The Bobcats jumped out to a 7-2 lead, including four unanswered points to force a Cougar timeout. The run continued on the other side as TXST stretched its lead to 15-7, and the Cougars used their final timeout of the set. Houston went on an 8-4 run to cut into the lead 19-15, but the Bobcats closed the set with a 5-2 run to win, 25-17.

The Bobcats will return home to play three matches in three days, beginning with a 6 p.m. rematch against North Texas on Thursday, March 25 at Strahan Arena in San Marcos, Texas.
