Pitching staff limits UTSA to three baserunners in seven innings

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Tori McCann, Jessica Mullins and Meagan King did exactly what the Texas State coaching staff asked as the pitching trio limited UTSA to only three baserunners in the Bobcats' 5-0 victory Friday night.

"I think (Hailey MacKay) said it best, the team is just loose and we are just playing (softball)," said Texas State softball head coach Ricci Woodard. "When things are clicking, things are clicking and I don't have to do a whole lot and that makes it nice."

Tori McCann, who started the game in the pitching circle for Texas State, pitched a brilliant contest as she retired the first nine batters she faced on just 31 pitches on the night. UTSA (5-7) got its first baserunner when Celeste Loughman singled a 1-1 pitch through the right side to start the top of the fourth inning. Riley Grunberg walked to follow, which then resulted in Jessica Mullins (6-2) being summoned from the bullpen and immediately retiring the next three batters in a row.

Mullins went on to strikeout the next four Roadrunners looking en route to retiring all nine batters she faced on the night. Meagan King, who saw her first game action since March 3 at Texas Tech, took over in the top of the seventh inning and allowed only a one-out infield single, before retiring the next two batters to close out the win.

"I think the pitching staff is doing a really good job right now," Woodard said. "I think, when you have this many good pitchers on your staff, you can change that up really easily and it's hard for hitters to make adjustments at the plate."

While McCann, Mullins and King were making it hard for opposing hitters at the plate, the Bobcat hitters were living differently.

Tara Oltmann recorded her second run-scoring hit in as many games as she sent a first-pitch pitch over the left-field fence for a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. MacKay, who batted behind Oltmann in the lineup Friday night, also hit a two-run home run to double the Bobcats' lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Baylee Lemons capped the Texas State scoring when she singled home Cat Crenek, who doubled to start the inning, in the bottom of the sixth.

Texas State will play again on Saturday, March 13 when the Bobcats travel to San Antonio to play UTSA at 6 p.m.
