LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Ja'Kayla Bowie shifted her performance in Texas State's 63-49 loss at Little Rock to overdrive as the junior guard from Tyler, Texas scored a career-high 14 points and knocked down a career-high two 3-pointers on the afternoon.
Bowie wasted little time in getting into the scoring column as her second shot attempt of the game fell through the net and gave Texas State (7-8, 4-6) a quick 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. Bowie's basket, off a
Kennedy Taylor assist, sparked a 6-0 TXST scoring run that was ultimately pushed to 8-2 advantage following a
Da'Nasia Hood layup.
Back-to-back 3-pointers in the closing minute by Little Rock, however, gave the Trojans a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
With Texas State down 36-26 with 6:25 remaining in the third quarter, Bowie found the bottom of the net, again, as a layup cut the Bobcats' deficit to eight. She immediately matched a Ky'lie Scott 3-point with one of her own, before hitting a pull-up jumper and cutting the deficit even more.
Following a
Lauryn Thompson free throw — one of the seven she made on the afternoon — Scott attempted to extend the Trojans' lead, but Bowie scored her eighth and ninth points of the quarter on another layup on a no-look, behind-the-back assist from Thompson, who was being double-teamed in the paint.
Taylor fed off the Bobcat energy and made it a one-possession game as she scored on a layup opportunity with 1:09 remaining in the third quarter. Bowie's hot quarter continued when she knocked down her second triple during the third and helped Texas State erase a 10-point halftime deficit.
Despite two baskets by Little Rock and the deficit extend to seven,
Avionne Alexander and Thompson combined to make it a one-possession game, again, when the duo scored four-straight points within a 30-second span.
Angelique Francis converted a second-chance layup and Scott knocked down another 3-point jumper to push the Little Rock (10-7, 6-4) lead back to eight. Hood, moments later, was on the receiving end of a Bowie assist when she made a layup to make it 53-47 with 5:07 left in the game.
After pushing its lead to eight with 4:09 left, Little Rock went into a prevent offense and drained the clock. This allowed only one-shot attempt by either time over the next minute and it wasn't until Taylor knocked down two free throws with 3:07 to play in the game that the Bobcats had an opportunity to score.
Little Rock responded with a 6-0 run over the game's final 2:37 to put the game away.
Texas State will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 11 when the Bobcats play host to UTA at 7 p.m.
