SAN MARCOS, Texas — The Texas State softball team continued to ride the momentum of its early-season success as the Bobcats knocked off Ole Miss, 2-1, and Sam Houston State, 10-3, Saturday afternoon.
"In between games, we talked about not coming out and letting the lull of game two get us today, so we wanted to make sure we got two (wins) today because, I think, we all felt like we had an opportunity to get two (wins) yesterday and we didn't," said Texas State softball head coach
Ricci Woodard. "We wanted to make sure that we went out and got two (wins) today and they did a good job of that."
Texas State (5-2) jumped on Ole Miss early Saturday afternoon as senior
Hailey MacKay singled home
Cat Crenek, who hit a one-out single back up the middle, and
Tara Oltmann, who sent a first-pitch into right field for a single, with two outs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Bobcat lead stood at two runs until the top of the fifth when a leadoff walk came around to score from third on a one-out sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Jessica Mullins (2-2) bounced back, though, to earn her second career complete game as the freshman right-hander scattered five hits, issued only one walk and struck out five Rebels on 110 pitches on the afternoon. Muillins, who has appeared in five games this season, boosts a 1.09 earned run average after allowing only four earned runs in 25.2 innings pitched this season.
Against the Bearkats, the Bobcat offense struck early, again, as fellow freshman
Baylee Lemons sliced a one-out 2-2 pitch through the left side to score
Hannah Earls and Oltmann to give Texas State a lead it did not relinquish the rest of the way. An inning later, Oltmann added to her productive week with a run-scoring hit to plate Earls and make it, 3-0, Bobcats.
ArieAnn Bell made it 5-0, Texas State, with a one-out double to right-centerfield to score
Molly Damiani, who pinch ran for MacKay after drawing an inning-opening walk, and
Sara Vanderford, who singled through the right side with one out. Bell, two batters later, came around to score when she touched home on a
Marisa Cruz single down the right-field line.
The Texas State offense ballooned its lead to 9-0 with a three-run bottom of the fourth that was highlighted by a two-run doble from Vanderford, who later scored on a Bearkat fielding error.
Crenek capped the scoring for Texas State with a solo home run over the right-centerfield fence with one out in the bottom of the fifth.
While the Bobcat offense was doing work at the plate, starting pitcher
Tori McCann (2-0) was doing work in the pitching circle as the sophomore right-hander took a no-hitter into the top of the fifth inning before a leadoff single broke it up.
Sam Houston State managed to prolong the game with a three-run top of the fifth inning after entering the inning trailing 9-0. However,
Meagan King came into the game to get the final three outs of the inning and didn't allow another baserunner the rest of the way.
Texas State will close out its portion of the Lonestar State Invitational when it hosts Lamar on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 12 p.m.
