MONROE, La. — A week after low temperatures forced the cancellation of its weekend series with Arkansas State, the Texas State women's basketball team returned from a two-week hiatus to shoot a season-high 52.8 percent en route to an 85-62 win at ULM Friday night.
Kennedy Taylor, who surpassed the 100-assist mark on the season for the third straight year, started the Texas State (9-10, 6-8) scoring with a driving layup at the 8:08 mark of the first period.
A second-chance layup by
Ja'Kayla Bowie made it 4-0, before Gara Beth Self made it a one-possession game seconds later. The Bobcats responded with a 6-0 scoring run to go up 10-2 following a 3-pointer from Taylor. Self, who scored the first eight points for ULM tonight, responded with her own 3-pointer.
The Bobcats ended the first quarter on an 8-3 run to take an 18-8 advantage into the second quarter following a
Lauryn Thompson 3-points with three seconds left in the quarter. The 10-point lead quickly became 15 at 23-8 when
Tianna Eaton sank a 3-pointer and Thompson converted another layup.
ULM (3-18, 1-14) got to within 11 at 27-16 at the four-minute mark of the second quarter following two free throws from Kierra Brimzy. Thompson, who scored a game-high 13 points, answered with two free throws of her own.
Texas State ended the second quarter on a 9-2 scoring run to take a 40-23 lead into the locker rooms for halftime after Bowie knocked down a jumper off a Warhawk turnover with 14 seconds left to play in the first half.
The 17-point Bobcat lead reach 20 points — for the first time — when freshman
Sierra Dickson knocked down her first career 3-point at the 7:48 mark of the third quarter.
Da'Nasia Hood, who entered the game as the conference's leading scorer, went on a personal 4-0 scoring run to push TXST's lead to 21 at 49-28 midway through the third.
Gabby Standifer, who knocked down a team-high three 3-pointers, connected on a shot from behind the 3-point arc with 37 seconds left to play in the quarter and extended the Bobcats' lead to 61-37.
Bowie gave Texas State's its largest lead — at the time — at 25 when she knocked down two free throws just 1:30 into the fourth quarter. The lead hovered around 20 for much of the quarter until a 3-pointer from Self made it 19 at the 3:54 mark.
Hood's 3-pointer at the 1:58 mark pushed Texas State's point total to a then-season-high 77 points with 1:58 left to play, before a layup from Dickson gave the Bobcats a 26-point lead.
The two teams will conclude their respective regular-season schedules against each other tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. with the game broadcasted on ESPN3.
