SAN ANTONIO, Texas- – Caleb Asberry scored 20 points, and
Shelby Adams netted 14 to lead the Texas State men's basketball team to a 75-57 victory over Incarnate Word Tuesday night at the McDermott Convocation Center.
How it Happened- Asberry scored five of Texas State's first seven points as Texas State opened a 7-2 lead to start the game. After UIW closed to within 11-9, the Bobcats went on a 22-9 run take a 33-18 lead. Asberry scored seven more points in that stretch, and
Drue Drinnon added six points on a pair of three-point shots from the left side.
Texas State held a 43-24 advantage at halftime as Asberry finished the opening frame with 17 points to lead all scorers. Drinnon finished with eight points, while
Isiah Small and freshman center
Brandon Love added four points each.
Texas State began the second half with a 12-0 run as
Isiah Small and
Nighael Ceaser combined for eight points inside the paint to extend the lead to 53-24.
However, UIW began a methodical comeback as the Cardinals went on an 18-6 run to close the gap to 59-42. After
Davion Coleman drove for a layup to put the Bobcats up 61-42, the Cardinals pulled back to within 67-55 when Josh Morgan made a jumper from the key and a layup.
Adams drained a jumper in the lane when the shot clock ran down to the final second and added a pair of layups to put the Bobcats back up 71-55. Drinnon drove for another layup on Texas State's next possession for a 73-55 advantage with 1:11 left to play. Adams made another jump shot in the paint to make the final score 75-57.
Texas State's win is the fourth straight win in season-openers for the Bobcats and is the eighth straight road victory for Texas State dating back to the 2020-21 season.
IN THE BOXSCORE
Texas State outscored UIW 44-16 in the paint and scored 19 points off 19 turnovers. The Bobcats had just 10 turnovers in the game and held a 22-17 rebounding advantage.
Adams scored six of his points down the stretch to hold off a UIW rally.
Drue Drinnon came off the bench to tally 12 points.
