SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team travels to San Antonio Tuesday night to play Incarnate Word in a non-conference game beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Alice P. McDermott Convocation Center.
LOOKING AT THE BOBCATS
Second-year head coach
Terrence Johnson has four starters and eight players returning from last season's team that finished with an 18-7 record and won the school's first Sun Belt Conference championship with a 12-3 league record. The championship was Texas State's first men's basketball conference championship since 1999. The Bobcats were 6-3 against non-conference opponents last season.
FOUR RETURNING STARTERS
Texas State returns four starters from last season's team in seniors
Mason Harrell,
Caleb Asberry,
Isiah Small, and
Shelby Adams.
Harrell was named a preseason First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection after averaging 13.9 points and handing out 3.3 assists per game in 2020-21. Asberry was named a preseason Second-Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection after averaging 13.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest. Small was tabbed a preseason Third-Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection and netted 10.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Adams returns after averaging 6.3 points per contest.
OTHER RETURNING PLAYERS
Other returning players include
Nighael Ceaser,
Dylan Dawson,
Deuce Guidry,
Darien Jenkins, and
Nate Martin. Ceaser averaged 5.2 points and 2.6 rebounds last season. Martin averaged 2.0 points and 1.6 rebounds, while Dawson chipped in with 1.5 points in 11 games, and Guidry played in two contests. Jenkins sat out last season as a redshirt.
NEWCOMERS
Texas State has added newcomers
Davion Coleman,
Drue Drinnon,
Nate Lacewell,
Brandon Love,
Tyrel Morgan, and
Dalen Whitlock.
Lacewell is a transfer from San Jose State. Morgan is from Northern Oklahoma College, where he earned NJCAA First-Team All-American in 2020-21.
Drinnon is a transfer from Navarro College, Love is from Houston's George Bush High School, and Whitlock comes from Clark High School in San Antonio.
SCOUTING UIW
Incarnate Word begins its fourth season under Dr. Carson Cunningham. The Cardinals were 8-14 last season, and 5-9 in Southland Conference play. They return Brandon Swaby and have added graduate transfer Robert Glasper who scored 18.7 points per game while at Arkansas Tech last season.

THE SERIES
Texas State enters Tuesday's game with a 2-0 series record against the Cardinals after winning 72-64 over Incarnate Word in San Marcos last season. The series began on Nov. 26, 1990, in San Marcos. Tuesday night's game marks the first time the Bobcats have played at UIW.
UP NEXT
Following the UIW game, Texas State will play a pair of road games against SEC opponents. The Bobcats travel to LSU on Friday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. The Bobcats play at Vanderbilt Sunday at 7 p.m.
Texas State plays its first home game against LeTourneau on Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 6 p.m. in Strahan Arena.
