Four join Texas State’s championship-winning volleyball program

SAN MARCOS, Texas — The three-time reigning Sun Belt Conference champion Texas State volleyball program signed a quartet of student-athletes on Wednesday to help continue its winning tradition for years to come.

Bobcat head coach Sean Huiet and his coaching staff announce the additions of Olivia Adair, Bailey Hanner, Maggie Walsh and Samantha Wunch to the program.

"We are so excited with our 2022 signing class," Huiet said. "I can't praise (assistant coach / recruiting coordinator) Tori (Plugge) and (associate head coach) Keith (Anderson) enough for their efforts to get us a top-tier recruiting class during a global pandemic.

"This group we have coming in will be ready to make an impact from the first day on campus. We knew we needed to get kids that both physically and mentally would be able to play minutes early in their career and we did just that."

Adair is a 5-foot-6 defensive specialist from Johnson City, Texas by way of Lyndon B. Johnson High School, where she was also a first-team all-district softball standout. As a junior last season, Adair was named the 29-2A District Most Valuable Player along with picking up her team's defensive player of the year and most valuable player awards. The year prior, she was named the 25-3A District Newcomer of the Year as well as her team's defensive player of the year award.

"Olivia, who I am so glad we added to this class, is a diehard Bobcat," Huiet said. "She is so consistent in the back court. With losing Kayla (Granado) and Brooke (Johnson), it's going to be nice to add some depth to that position. Olivia's passing and defense are strengths for her that we look forward to having in our gym."

From Fort Bend Christian Academy in Sugar Land, TX, Hanner is a 6-foot-2 middle blocker who was named a first-team all-state selection this year. Hanner was also dubbed the 2021 Greater Houston Private School Offensive Player of the Year. In the classroom, she's a distinguished scholar and was named to the academic all-state team.

"Bailey is someone who I think is underrated in the '22 class," Huiet said. "She is an athletic middle who can attack all across the net and is also a natural blocker. I am anxious to get Bailey in the gym with our training and see where it can take her. She has a very high ceiling and I think she can be a top middle in our conference."

A 5-foot-10, outside hitter from San Marcos High School, Walsh was recently named the 26-6A District Most Valuable Player. Last season, she was named the district's offensive most valuable player after being named a 5-6A first-team all-district selection in 2019. As a freshman in 2018, Walsh was named the 5-6A District Newcomer of the Year.

"Maggie is an absolute steal for us," Huiet said. "She is a complete 6 rotation outside hitter that can score and defend really well. She reminds me a lot of Amy Pflughaupt, who was an all-conference outside hitter for us in 2017 and 2018. Maggie has a very high volleyball IQ and can score in so many ways. Her passing and defense are something that will help her see court time right away."

Rounding out the four-member signing class is Wunsch, who is a 6-foot-1 outside hitter from Vandegrift High School in Austin, TX. Wunsch is a first-team all-district selection and has also been named a AVCA All-Region honoree. Additionally, she's a four-time first-team all-district softball player as well.

"Sam is someone we went after really hard, because of her competitiveness and desire to be really good," Huiet said. "She is a true competitor who loves to compete and get after it in the gym. Sam is a lefty that can swing with a lot of power and terminate at a high level. I think Bobcat fans are going to love watching her fiery style of play.

Texas State will close out its fall 2021 regular season with a trip to Louisiana this weekend. The Bobcats will play ULM on Friday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. CT, before facing off at Louisiana on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. CT.
