Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Texas State falls, splits weekend with Louisiana

SAN MARCOS, Texas — The first Sun Belt Conference series on back-to-back days of the season provided to be too much for the Texas State Bobcats as the home team fell to Louisiana, 67-41, just 24 hours after playing the first game of the series.

"We can't turn the basketball over the way we did tonight — number one — and expect to win anything no matter where it's being played," said Texas State women's basketball head coach Zenarae Antoine. "The second piece is it's really important to be able to make an adjustment to slow a team down and we really struggled being able to do that tonight. That's really just a recipe for a different time."

Unlike Friday, Louisiana (2-5, 1-1) wasted no time taking the lead as Jomyra Mathis made an old-fashion three-point play just 10 seconds into the game.

The Ragin' Cajuns lead for the rest of the game.

Lauryn Thompson, who scored a game-high 25 points on Friday, made her only field goal attempt on the afternoon, when she made a layup to cut Texas State's deficit to four at the 5:58 mark of the first quarter. Da'Nasia Hood, who finished the game with nine points and nine rebounds, and Chelsea Johnson both tried to keep the Bobcats in the game when they made a 3-pointer and layup, respectively, to answer Louisiana shots.

Johnson, who played nine minutes off the bench, made the back end of two free throws with 1:21 remaining in the first quarter to cut the Bobcats' deficit to 14-11, but Louisiana responded with a quick 7-0 run over the remaining minute to take a 21-11 lead into the second.

Throughout the second quarter, the Louisiana defense held the Texas State offense to only two points on 1-of-9 shooting to take a commanding 30-13 advantage into the locker rooms.
Louisiana's defensive stranglehold on the Bobcat offense carried over into the third quarter as Texas State managed only four made field goals on 12 attempts while the Ragin' Cajuns offense poured in a game-high 23 points during the third 10-minute stanza.

The fourth quarter is when Texas State (4-3, 1-1) found its stride offensively as the Bobcats outscored Louisiana, 17-14, behind eight points from Kennedy Taylor, who finished with a team-high 10 points and four assists in 32 minutes of game action.

Texas State continues conference play next weekend when the Bobcats travel to Jonesboro, Ark., to play Arkansas State on Friday, Jan. 8 and Saturday, Jan. 9.
