Bobcats soar past Warhawks for second consecutive sweep

SAN MARCOS, Texas – After hitting a season-high in the morning, Texas State (7-1, 2-0 Sun Belt) held ULM (1-4, 0-2 Sun Belt) to an opponent season-low -.010 hitting percentage as they pulled off its second sweep of the day (25-14, 25-16, 25-14) Friday night at Strahan Arena.
 
The Bobcats hit .258 behind 37 kills and had five aces. Defensively, the Maroon and Gold had eight blocks to go along with 52 digs while ULM had five blocks and 42 digs.   
 
"I thought tonight was a good team win," said head coach Sean Huiet. "We are excited to have two wins in the Sun Belt and it was nice to be able to get in a lot of different kids in both matches."
 
Junior outside hitter Janell Fitzgerald and sophomore outside hitter Lauren Teske paced the Bobcats with 11 kills each. Fitzgerald hit .474 om the match (11-2-19) and added four digs and three blocks to her statline. Teske contributed six digs and two blocks. Senior middle blocker Tyeranee Scott registered six kills and had a match-high five blocks, including one solo block. Junior setter Emily DeWalt had 16 assists, seven digs, two aces, a block and a kill, and freshman setter Ryann Torres logged 10 assists, two digs and a kill in her first collegiate match. Senior setter Brooke Johnson matched DeWalt's two aces and finished with 14 digs, while junior libero Kayla Granado led the team with 15 digs to go along with four assists.  
 
Senior outside hitter Haley Coulter led the Warhawks with eight kills and had nine assists. She was followed her fellow classmate and OH Ina Gosen's five kills. Gosen also had three blocks as did senior middle blocker Catherine Griffith to lead the team. Freshman setter Karson Davis led ULM with 12 assists to go with seven digs and junior setter McKinley Thiede finished with 10 assists and one ace. Sophomore outside hitter Madeline Hogan was the libero and led the team with 15 digs.
 
Texas State improves to 48-2 all-time against ULM and extends its winning streak to 17 in head-to-head matches. The Bobcats are also 26-0 when playing the Warhawks in San Marcos.
 
Set 1
The first set featured six ties and six lead changes. ULM had an early 9-7 lead behind a 3-0 run, but TXST blew the set open with an 8-0 burst to take a 15-9 lead. The Bobcats never looked back and won the first set 25-14 behind seven kills from Teske and five kills from Fitzgerald.
 
Set 2
The Bobcats opened the set with a 4-1 lead and although the offense stalled, the home team went into the media timeout with a 15-11 advantage thanks to a -.174 hitting percentage by ULM. TXST continued to dominate defensively, as they ran away with the set 25-16 and ULM hit an opposing season low in a single set at -.086.
 
Set 3
ULM came out firing and led 5-2, but the Bobcats scored three unanswered to knot the score at five. Later, the home team used a 4-0 run to take a 9-7 lead and another 5-0 burst made the count 14-8. ULM gave one final push with a 3-1 run, but Fitzgerald went on a personal 3-0 run that would spark an overall 9-2 scoring margin that ended the set 25-14. Fitzgerald had four kills on six attempts and no errors (.667), while Torres directed the offense with eight assists in the stanza.

The Texas State, ULM series will conclude at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Strahan Arena.
