SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State football team closed out a tumultuous week and a difficult season with a 49-14 loss against No. 16-ranked Coastal Carolina on a rain-swept Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.
Â
"It has been a long week, and it's been a long year," Texas State head coach
Jake Spavital said. "It was a frustrating week with the unforeseen circumstances of the passing away of Kham (
Khambrail Winters). I think those kids were trying not to show it, but they are still wearing it pretty hard. But they came out here and played. I didn't think we fought the way we normally fought in previous games."
Â
The Bobcats (2-10, 2-6 in Sun Belt) could not stop the rain nor the Chanticleers' rushing attack as Coastal Carolina rushed for 406 yards and five touchdowns in the game. The 406 yards are the most the Bobcats have surrendered on the ground since Georgia Southern ran for 503 on Oct. 29, 2015.
Â
Coastal Carolina (9-0, 7-0 in the Sun Belt) sacked Bobcat quarterback
Brady McBride three times in the game and held Texas State to just 116 yards rushing.
Â
McBride kept Texas State in contention early in the game when he threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to
Javen Banks to pull the Bobcats to 14-7 with 4:33 left to play in the first quarter. For the day, McBride completed 20-of 26 passes for 202 yards.
Â
However, Coastal Carolina countered with Reese White running 10 yards for a touchdown and quarterback Grayson McCall throwing a pair of TD passes to Jaivon Heiligh in the second quarter to break the game open 35-7 at halftime.
Â
C.J. Marable extended Coastal Carolina's lead with his third touchdown of the game in the third quarter. Marable led the Chanticleers with 160 yards to go along with his three TDs on 16 carries. White ran for 72 yards on seven attempts.
Â
The two teams exchanged touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Baden Pinson scored on a nine-yard run for Coastal Carolina, and
Jahmyl Jeter ran for a five-yard TD for the Bobcats.
Â
Jeter rushed for a team-high 47 yards and the TD on seven carries.
Calvin Hill added 35 yards rushing on five attempts and caught three passes for a team-high 68 yards receiving.
Â
Banks led Texas State's receivers with five catches for 38 yards and his touchdown. He has scored a touchdown reception in each of the last four games.
Â
"This game isn't going to define our year," Spavital said. "We have done a lot of good things this year. The exposure we received has put Texas State on the map outside of the state of Texas. You talk about the death of Kham, having to play through COVID. We had 127 missed games on our two-deep. Then you throw in some of the circumstances we have faced this year. I give these kids a lot of credit for the fact that they just showed up and played.
Â
"I think we have gotten a lot better than we were last year, and we still have a long way to go. We have a young football team. I have a lot of these players back for three years. Â The future is pretty bright here if we continue to build and grow, work, and mature." Â Â
