Bobcat offense shines in 98-59 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor

SAN MARCOS, Texas– Texas State (1-0) gave Bobcat Nation a 98-59 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Wednesday night at Strahan Arena.  
 
The Bobcats had a good offensive game as they shot 53.5 percent in the game on 38-of-71 shooting. TXST won the rebounding battle 49-31, including a 15-7 margin on the offensive boards. Defensively the team held UMHB to a 35.6 field goal percentage, forced 22 turnovers and logged 12 steals in the victory.
 
"I thought tonight was more about us than anything else," said interim head coach Terrence Johnson. "We have gone through a lot of adversity already this season. Today, I wanted to see how would we respond to on-court adversity and I thought the guys rallied around each other and stayed focused even when up big."
 
Four Bobcats finished with double-digit scoring, beginning with senior forward Isiah Small's 17 points (8-of-11). Small also led the team with eight rebounds (six offensive rebounds) and added two steals, one assist, and one block to his stat line. Junior guard Mason Harrell followed with 15 points (6-of-10) and had a game-high five assists, marking the ninth time in his career he has totaled five or more dimes in a game. Graduate guard Marlin Davis had 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and one steal, and junior guard Caleb Asberry also had 10 points to go along with a career-high seven rebounds and matched his career-high of three assists. Asberry also had one steal.  
 
Guard Carson Hammond led all scorers with 18 points and had a team-best eight rebounds, three assists, and the team's only block. Guard Josiah Johnson had 17 points to round out the Cru's double-figure scorers had five rebounds and one steal in the contest.
 
FIRST HALF
The Bobcats opened the game fast with a 6-0 run and stretched their lead to 18-6 behind an 8-0 run after back-to-back triples from Asberry and Davis, respectively, to push the lead to double-digits at 18-6. UMHB trimmed the lead to four at 25-21, but the Bobcats closed the half with a massive 19-2 run highlighted by 13 unanswered to end the half with a 44-23 advantage. Harrell led TXST with nine points in the half and Small followed with eight points, three rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal.
 
SECOND HALF
Texas State kept its foot on the gas and outscored UMHB 14-4 by the 15:23 mark in the second half, making the score 58-25. The Maroon and Gold grew its lead to as many as 45 points and outscored the Crew in the second half.
 
NOTEABLES
• Texas State had 28 points on 22 UMHB turnovers.
• The Bobcats dominated the paint points, 58-24.
• Ten players Bobcat players scored
• Outside of the two leading scorers for UMHB, the Bobcats held the rest of the team to a 20.6 field goal percentage (7-of-27). Both leading scores had seven made field goals.
