Bobcats Break Lady Braves, 67-59

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State (7-4) hauled in a season-best 53 rebounds and junior forward Jayla Johnson scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Bobcats to a 67-59 victory over Alcorn State (4-8) on Monday evening at Strahan Arena.

Sophomore guard Kennedy Taylor stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, a career-high six rebounds and a season-high eight assists. Junior guard Avionne Alexander also turned in a career performance and dropped 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Johnson energized the home crowd by nailing her first eight shots from the field and found success primarily in the mid-range game. TXST led 33-31 at halftime behind a 45% (13-for-29) first half shooting mark. Texas State exited the locker room and played its best in the third quarter and outscored Alcorn, 26-8. TXST connected on 62% (11-for-18) of its field goals and outrebounded ASU, 14-3.

A sizable 12-2 run the last 4:15 of the third gave Texas State a 20-point cushion heading into the final period. The non-stop full court ASU press flustered TXST into eight turnovers in the last five minutes of the game to cut the final margin to eight points.

Sophomore center Da'Nasia Hood collected a career-high 14 rebounds and scored eight points. Texas State moved to 6-0 at home this year and is now 20-4 the last five years in non-conference games at Strahan Arena.

The Bobcats evened up the all-time series against the Lady Braves, 2-2.

Texas State shot 43% (27-for-63) from the floor, 18% from three (2-for-11) and 79% at the charity stripe (11-for-14). Alcorn shot 32% (21-for-65), 29% from three (5-for-17) 70% (12-for-17) from the free throw line.
