ATLANTA – The Texas State women's basketball team (7-7, 2-0 Sun Belt) slid past the Georgia State Panthers (7-6, 1-1 Sun Belt) by a score of 69-60 on Saturday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena behind senior guard
Toshua Leavitt's career-high 35 points.
The win bumps Texas State to 2-0 in conference play, winning the opening two games of league play for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
"We played our tails off, we coached our tails off," Head coach
Zenarae Antoine said. "Georgia State is a tough team and a tough matchup for us with their size. This conference is going to provide us with a new challenge night in and night out. I am proud of our team for the fight they showed today."
Leavitt has dominated the Panthers in Atlanta in each of the last two Bobcat road contests. On Jan. 25, 2017 Leavitt matched a career-best 34 points on 10-of-16 shooting from behind the 3-point line against GSU. Fast-forward nearly a full year and she pounded the Panthers to the tune of a new career-high 35 points on 9-of-14 shooting from deep. The Nixa, Mo., native has amassed three 30-point games in her career, all three coming on the road against Sun Belt foes.
Junior guard
Brooke Holle played much bigger than her 5-foot 7-inch frame would suggest. She tallied 15 rebounds, a career-mark, while adding 14 points and six assists. Holle has recorded four double-doubles in her three seasons in Maroon and Gold.
The Bobcats held the conference's fourth-leading scorer sophomore guard Jada Lewis to 5-of-13 shooting and 16 points. Senior forward K.K. Williams added 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the 3-point line.
Leavitt started the scoring festivities with a triple at the 8:59 mark of the first quarter, the first of three 3-pointers she would hit in the opening frame. Her fourth shot from distance gave the Bobcats a 25-16 advantage with 3:40 remaining in the half. The nine-point edge was the largest first half lead for the Cats. GSU's Williams buried a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining in the first half to pull the Panthers within a pair at 30-28 after 20 minutes of play.
Texas State exploded out of the halftime break, pushing the lead up to 16 points with 2:30 left on the clock in the third. Sophomore forward
Jayla Johnson and junior forward
Jazza Johns each found soft spots in the middle of the Panther zone defense to extend the lead. However, GSU would not go away quietly. The home team trimmed the lead to two with 7:03 in the fourth quarter on the strength of a 17-3 extended run. The score sat at 52-50.
Leavitt calmly scored the next eight Bobcat points on a pair of triples and a couple of free throws. Holle splashed in a corner 3-pointer to increase the once slim TXST lead to 63-52. Combined, the two guards scored the final 17 points for the visiting Bobcats to ice away the game.
Up next, the Bobcats will head back to Strahan Arena for a pair of Sun Belt Conference clashes against Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State. TXST will square off with CCU at 7 p.m. on Jan. 10 on ESPN+, while the APP game will begin at 2 p.m. on Jan. 12.
