SAN ANTONIO – The Texas State volleyball team powered past UTSA 3-0 (25-22, 31-29, 25-22) Tuesday night inside Convocation Center.
The Bobcats (6-5) completed the season sweep over their rivals and have handed the Roadrunners (7-3) two of their three losses this season.
TXST was led by a 21-kill performance from junior
Cheyenne Huskey. The total was the highest by a Sun Belt Conference player in a three-set match this season and the most by a Bobcat player in a three-set match since at least 2006 (Texas State's game-by-game statistics only go back through 2007). Huskey committed just five errors on 30 swings for a hitting percentage of .533.
Junior
Amy Pflughaupt registered 10 kills and just one error on 30 swings (.300), while true freshman
Jillian Slaughter added nine kills and one error on 15 swings (.533). True freshman
Emily DeWalt distributed 41 assists, and junior
Micah Dinwiddie added a match-high 10 digs.
Kenedi Rutherford paced the Roadrunners with 17 kills, while Hannah Lopez added 11. Amanda Gonzales and Mia Perales both dished out 22 assists, and Shelby Williams tallied 10 digs.
The Bobcats recorded a season-high hitting percentage of .356 and held the home team to just a .215 percentage. TXST also led in kills (50-47), assists (49-46), digs (41-39), and blocks (8-2). UTSA ended with the lead in service aces (5-3).
SET 1
Texas State jumped out to a 5-1 lead and never trailed en route to taking the opening period 25-22. The Roadrunners never let TXST get out to a lead of more than four points, however, until the maroon and gold took an 18-13 advantage. UTSA fought back to within one at 22-21, but the comeback attempt would stifle as the visitors would find three of the final four points.
SET 2
The Bobcats won the second set 31-29 in a frame that featured plenty of back-and-forth drama. Texas State initially plowed ahead 8-1 and looked to be well on its way to victory, but UTSA used an elongated 15-5 run to move on top 16-13. TXST scored the next three points to pull back level, and the two teams jockeyed for position the rest of the way. The Bobcats were able to fend off four set points from the Roadrunners before finally capturing the game on their third attempt.
SET 3
TXST shut the door on UTSA by winning the third 25-22. The visitors found a 10-4 advantage and never allowed the Roadrunners to move back into an even position. UTSA got within one on two occasions at 20-19 and 21-20. Texas State finished the night by winning four of the next six points, punctuated by one final kill from Huskey.
Texas State will continue its season-high six-match stretch away from home at the 2018 Sparky Classic Sept. 14-15 in Tempe, Ariz. The Bobcats will face Gonzaga, Northern Arizona and host Arizona State.
