Texas State Falls to Cal State Fullerton, 2-1

LOS ANGELES – The second-seeded Texas State softball team (42-15, 18-5 SBC) dropped a tough game against the third-seeded Cal State Fullerton (34-23, 18-3 Big West) in the opening game of the 2018 NCAA Los Angeles Regional by a score of 2-1. The Bobcats will take on Sacramento State at 4:30 p.m. PT on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium.

Texas State found home plate first, scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning. Bailee Carter reached first base after being nicked on the elbow by an inside pitch. Mari Cranek laid down a picture-perfect bunt to advance Carter to second. Haleigh Davis, the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Championship Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, looped an RBI single to left field, scoring Carter from second with ease.

The Titans answered in the top of the fifth inning. Julia Valenzuela roped a double off the wall in right center field to kick off the inning. She advanced to third on a groundout to first base and came around to score on a single lifted into shallow left field from Brooke Clemetson. An infield single gave Fullerton runners on first and second with two outs in the inning. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Ari Williams popped up to the catcher, but Davis was unable to secure the ball after a colliding with Randi Rupp on a miscommunication between the two fielders. As the ball escaped the glove of Davis, the Titans scored the go-ahead run.

Texas State put runners on base in each of the last three innings. Ariel Ortiz drew a five-pitch walk with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hailey MacKay drilled an infield single off of the glove of the shortstop in the Bobcats' next at bat. Ortiz attempted to advance to third on the play but was cut down to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mari Cranek singled through the right side with two away in the frame. Davis drew a four-pitch walk to give Texas State a pair of runners in the inning. A lineout ending the Bobcat threat. Finally, in the home half of the seventh inning, ArieAnn Bell drew a pinch-hit walk but was stranded at first.

In the circle, Randi Rupp went the distance for the Bobcats. She pitched seven innings of softball and allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits and no walks. The Texas State all-time leader in strikeouts, sat down seven Fullerton batters. The loss moves her season record to 27-11 on the season.
