SAN MARCOS, Texas – The No. 24 Texas State softball team (30-8, 11-0 SBC) rallied late to topple Texas (23-15, 6-0 Big-12) by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday night inside Bobcat Softball Stadium in front of a school-record 1,402 fans. The original stadium record was set on Feb. 18, 2009 in a 3-2 victory over Texas A&M in the first game ever played at the new Bobcat Softball Stadium.
The victory gives the Bobcats 30 for the season in just 38 chances, tied for the fastest a TXST has ever reached 30 wins in a single season. The 2001 team that finished with a school-record 54 wins and last season's NCAA Regional team each accomplished the feat in 38 games. The Bobcats extended its win streak to eight games and have won 16 of the last 17 games.
"Tonight was a big moment for our team all the way around," head coach
Ricci Woodard said. "Our young kids were able to experience a loud, intense atmosphere which will be what we see as we continue through the season. We appreciate the support from our fans. To set the attendance record and have the atmosphere we had tonight was tremendous for our athletes."
Texas struck first on the scoreboard, scoring in the top of the second inning. Bekah Alcozer connected on a solo home run to left center on the first pitch she saw in the inning. The Bobcats answered quickly with a run in the bottom of the second.
Tara Oltmann hit a ground ball off of the pitcher's glove, reaching safely on an infield single.
Haleigh Davis looped a single over the shortstops head and into shallow left field. With two on and two away in the inning,
Sierra Steimel reached on an infield single to third base to load the bases.
Mari Cranek, the next Bobcat batter, was hit by a pitch on the elbow, driving in Texas State's first run of the game.
Both offenses fell silent until the bottom of the sixth inning.
ArieAnn Bell broke the silence with an opposite field single into left field and was lifted for a pinch runner,
Bailee Carter. Steimel and Cranek both singled to left field to load the bases. Coach Woodard inserted
Brianna Sannem into the lineup as a pinch hitter. Sannem delivered off the bench, driving a sacrifice fly into center field to score Carter from third base.
"I thought our hitters kept battling and fighting off pitches until we could make things happen," said Woodard. "We had quality at bats from top to bottom."
Randi Rupp went the distance for the Bobcats, pitching seven innings of one-run softball. Rupp allowed six hits and a walk while striking out nine Texas batters. The victory was career win No. 100 for Rupp as she becomes the second pitcher in program history to notch 100 wins. Nicole Neuerburg holds the school record with 107 career wins in the circle.
"Randi did what Randi does," said Woodard. "She has learned to battle and be able to be successful in these moments. We are proud of her for getting No. 100 tonight. We feel that when she is pitching for us that we can compete with anyone in the country. This is a big milestone for her."
Next up, the Bobcats will then hit the road for its first conference road trip since defeating Georgia State in a pair of games to open up SBC play in mid-March. TXST will take on defending conference champion Louisiana in a three game set starting with a doubleheader on Saturday. The series will close with a noon game on Sunday.
