SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State softball team (15-7) handled Houston Baptist (2-8) by a score of 5-3 on Wednesday evening at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
The Bobcats wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, putting a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning.
Christiana McDowell tripled in the inning before scoring on a two-run home run from
Ariel Ortiz. Her third home run of the season traveled over the left field wall to give the Cats an early two-run lead.
Houston Baptist scored in the fourth inning to cut the Texas State lead in half. Two Huskies reached base, one via a walk and the other on an error from the Bobcat defense. A single to right field plated the HBU runner standing on third base.
In the home half of the fifth inning, the Bobcats posted its second crooked number on the scoreboard, scoring three runs. The first run plated when
Brianna Sannem lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring
Bailee Carter from third base. With the bases loaded,
Christiana McDowell stepped to the plate and slapped a single into right field.
Jaclyn Molenaar and
Haleigh Davis came around to score, moving the Bobcat lead to 5-1.
The Huskies answered right back, scoring a pair of runs on a two-run home run down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Krista Jacobs was handed the ball for the Bobcats, starting in the circle for coach Woodard. The junior pitched 3.2 innings and yielded one hit, one walk and one unearned run. She struck out one Husky batter.
McKenna Fryar took over for Jacobs with two away in the third inning. The freshman gave up two runs on three hits but struck out five batters in the contest and earned the win.
Next up for the Bobcats, Texas State will open up conference play with a double-header against Georgia State in Atlanta on Saturday. Game one will begin at 1 p.m. and will be immediately followed by game two. The final game of the three-game set with the Panthers is slated for a noon start on Sunday.
