Texas State Loses Heartbreaker at UTA, 61-59 in Overtime

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas State women's basketball team (16-8, 9-4 SBC) lost an old-fashioned slugfest to archrival UTA (14-10, 8-5 SBC), 61-59 in overtime, inside College Park Center on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats played in their first overtime game of the season, while the Lady Mavs moved to 3-0 in 45 minute games.

"We had a rough night from the free throw line and it is tough because we are one of the top free throw shooting teams in the Sun Belt Conference," head coach Zenarae Antoine said. "That aside, our kids played with a lot of passion and they never gave in. As a coach, I will take this team to battle any night."

The Bobcats roared out to an early lead in the first quarter. After UTA scored the first two points, Texas State rattled off the next 13 points. Ti'Aira Pitts continued her stellar play on the offensive end, scoring seven of the Bobcats first nine points of the game. Pitts finished the game with nine points.

The Lady Mavs pulled within three points before the end of the first frame and the game was played within a 10-point window over the last three quarters and overtime. Bobcat Radio play-by-play analyst Bill Culhane called the game 'an old-fashioned Texas State-UT Arlington basketball game'.

Fast-forward to the fourth quarter, the Bobcats carried a five-point lead into the final stanza. UTA started the quarter on a 5-0 run to even the game at 43. The game was back and forth for the last 7:23, never more than a bucket lead for either team. The Bobcats seemed to take a one-point lead on a corner jumper by Pitts, but following a long review, the shot was deemed a deep 2-pointer instead of the originally ruled 3-point shot. The shot tied the two rivals up at 53, the 11th tie of the ball game, with one minute remaining in the contest.

Toshua Leavitt tipped a UTA pass out of bounds, but not before it clipped the heel of one of the UTA players. The steal gave Texas State the possession with 53 seconds remaining. Brooke Holle drew a foul on the ensuing play but rimmed out a pair of free throws.

UTA gathered in the rebound and raced up the court, but Taeler Deer forced another turnover by the home team. Unfortunately, the Bobcats turned it right back over near the end of regulation. UTA had a clean look at a half court heave at the buzzer, clanging off the back iron as the horn sounded. The near miss sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Bobcats were outscored 8-6. Texas State made just 1-of-7 shot attempts and 3-of-6 free throws. As coach Antoine stated, it was a rough night at the free throw line. In the second half and overtime, the Bobcats made just 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from the free throw lines.

The Bobcats were led by Taeler Deer, who notched her fifth double-double of the season. Deer scored a team-high 15 points and dished out 10 assists. The senior now has handed out 159 helpers this season, the second highest total for a Bobcat in a single-season.

Brooke Holle recorded her first career double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds. Holle also grabbed three steals for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats will be back on the road for the final two games of this three-game conference road trip. Texas State will look to avenge an earlier season home loss to Louisiana on Thursday. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside the Cajundome. The second leg of the trip will be a rematch with the ULM Warkhawks, tip is slated for noon at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Saturday.
