SAN MARCOS, Texas – Freshman
Alonzo Sule recorded his first double-double and five players scored in double figures as the Texas State men's basketball team used a balanced attack to defeat Houston Baptist 90-80 in Strahan Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Sule came off the bench to record career-highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bobcats. Four other Bobcats scored in double figures as
Nijal Pearson netted 14 points,
Alex Peacock scored 11, while
Tre'Larenz Nottingham and
Jaylen Shead added 10 points each.
HBU's Ian Dubose scored 31 points to lead the Huskies as he finished the game making 8-of-15 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 beyond the three-point line. He also was 12-of-13 at the free throw line. Edward Hardt added 18 points with six rebounds, while Philip McKenzie added nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
HBU jumped out to an early 8-6 lead before the Bobcats used a 9-0 run to take a 15-8 advantage. Sule came off the bench and scored his first five points of the game during the stretch, and Nottingham added a pair of layups for the Bobcats, who never trailed again in the game.
The Huskies did close to within 24-21 on a layup by Dubose, but Texas State answered by outscoring HBU, 16-4, during the final six minutes of the first half and led 40-25 at intermission.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 17, when Pearson opened the second half making a three-point shot from the left baseline. But, HBU stormed back when Dubose hit a pair of three-point shots and McKenzie added a pair of free throws.
The Huskies got to within 48-45 with 13:52 left before Pearson and Nottingham combined for a pair of three-point field goals to thwart HBU's comeback.
The Bobcats didn't allow the Huskies to get any closer than five points the rest of the way as Peacock made four free throws and Pearson added two more to make the score, 64-52 with 9:36 left to play.
The Bobcats led by as many as 15 points before Dubose made a rare four-point play when he nailed a three-point shot and a free throw after being fouled on the play. Following a turnover by the Bobcats, Hardt added a layup to pull HBU back to within eight, 88-80, with 16 seconds left to play.
Mason Harrell made two free throws for the Bobcats as Texas State won the game by a final 10-point margin, 90-80.
The win was the seventh straight victory for the Bobcats, who improved their record to 9-1 this season. That is the best start by a Bobcat team since 1950-51. The seven-game winning streak is the longest for Texas State since 1993-94, when Texas State entered the NCAA Tournament with a 10-game winning streak.
Texas State will travel to UT Rio Grande Valley on December 15 and Arkansas on December 22 before its next home game against Howard Payne on December 29.
