Texas State falls in overtime at Tulane, 67-61

NEW ORLEANS – The Texas State women's basketball team (4-7) dropped an overtime decision by a score of 67-61 at Tulane (8-3) in the consolation round of the Tulane Classic on Saturday afternoon at Devlin Fieldhouse. The loss is the third-straight for the Bobcats.

Texas State was led in scoring by all-tournament junior guard Brooke Holle. She posted a season-high 24 points on 9-of-22 (40.9 percent) from the floor. She added 10 rebounds to her line, marking her first double-double of the season. She also contributed three assists and a pair of steals in 43 minutes of run.

Senior guard Toshua Leavitt was the only other Bobcat to compile double-figure scoring. She netted 22 points, but it came at the expense of an 8-of-24 (33.3 percent) shooting night. Leavitt knocked home 6-of-19 (31.6 percent) of her 3-point field goal attempts.

Senior forward Zandra Emanuel pulled down 11 boards to establish a career-high and lead the Bobcats to a season-best 48 rebounds. Freshman guard Ja'Kayla Bowie matched Holle's output with a season-high 10 misses.

Tulane had a trio of players reach double-figures in the scoring column. Sophomore guard Sierra Cheatham led the Green Wave with 18 points. She added seven rebounds and two steals. Senior center Harlyn Wyatt posted a double-double with 12 points and a team-best 10 rebounds. Finally, sophomore forward Krystal Freeman tallied 10 points and six rebounds.

Texas State stormed out of the gate as Holle scored the first six points of the contest. She connected on a pair of 3-point field goals in the opening three minutes of the game. After a Holle layup gave the Cats an 8-6 advantage at the 4:25 mark, Tulane scored the final 11 points of the first frame to take a 17-8 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Tulane netted the first three points of the second quarter to push the lead up to a game-high 12 points. Leavitt responded with her first made 3-pointer of the game. Back-to-back buckets from Emanuel and Bowie sliced the Green Wave lead to five points. Texas State was able to narrow the margin to four points entering intermission.

Leavitt opened the third quarter with five quick points to give the Bobcats a lead, 31-30, for the first time since the under-five media timeout in the first quarter. The teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the period as neither team could pull away. A banked 3-pointer from the top of the key from Ba. Holle sent the Cats into the fourth quarter up by a count of 43-37.

The Green Wave answered the jab with a 6-0 run to begin the fourth quarter. Leavitt silenced the home crowd with a deep 3-point shot from the right wing to put the Bobcats up 46-43. TXST forged ahead by as many as six points with 4:53 to play but were unable to put away a pesky Tulane team. The Green Wave scored nine of the final 12 points of regulation to force overtime with the score knotted at 54-54.

In overtime, Br. Holle broke the scoring seal with a driving layup down the right side of the lane. Tulane scored the next nine points of the five-minute extra period to seize control of the game. The Green Wave then put the clamps down on the defensive end to escape with a 67-61 victory.

Up next, the Bobcats will be off for nine days before returning to San Marcos to play Texas A&M International. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 from Strahan Arena.
