SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State volleyball team took down Coastal Carolina 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21) in a Sun Belt Conference match Saturday night inside Strahan Arena.
Â
The Bobcats (18-5, 9-0 Sun Belt) remained undefeated in conference play and ran their win streak to 13 matches in a row. That mark is tied for the longest since 2009.
Â
The Chanticleers (6-9, 5-2 Sun Belt) entered the weekend 40-2 against Sun Belt opponents since joining the league in 2016. But, after also falling to UT Arlington on Friday, the two-time defending champions suffered back-to-back conference losses for the first time since Sept. 27-28, 2013 as members of the Big South.
Â
True freshman
Emily DeWalt had a monster stat line with match highs in both assists (42) and digs (19) to go along with four kills and four blocks. She leads the Sun Belt with 15 double-doubles this season.
Â
Junior
Micah Dinwiddie (18) and sophomore
Brooke Johnson (10) combined for 28 digs, while senior
Amy Pflughaupt (12), junior
Cheyenne Huskey (11) and senior
Madison Daigle (10) all reached double digits in the kill department.
Â
Sara Boothe (27 assists, 10 digs) and Anett Nemeth (18 kills, 11 assists) recorded double-doubles in the losing effort. Kyla Manning added 12 kills, and Sydney Alvis registered 18 digs for Coastal Carolina.
Â
The maroon and gold led in kills (58-49), attack percentage (.231-.145), digs (76-55), and blocks (15-11). Both sides had four aces.
SET 1
The opening period was easily won by the Bobcats. The home team roared out of the gates to collect a massive 17-4 lead before the visitors had a chance to catch their breath. CCU eventually settled into the match and fought back to make the scoreline look more respectable but was still handled 25-17.
Â
SET 2
Coastal Carolina managed to equalize by claiming the second set 25-22. Texas State initially found an 8-4 lead, but the visitors drew level at 10-10 thanks to a 4-0 run. Neither team led by more than two points until TXST went ahead 20-17. The remainder of the stanza was all CCU, however, as the visitors captured eight of the final 10 points.
Â
SET 3
The modicum of momentum garnered by the Chanticleers quickly vanished after the maroon and gold won the third frame 25-20. There were six ties in the set, with the final deadlock coming at 14-14. Texas State scored the next four points and won seven of the final 10 after Coastal Carolina was able to get within one at 18-17.
Â
SET 4
Texas State ended the night by securing the fourth set 25-21. The home side went ahead 3-2 and led the rest of the frame. The Bobcats pushed their advantage out to five at 9-4, but CCU crawled back within one at 10-9. TXST surged into an 18-12 lead, which was just enough of a cushion for the team to shut down one final comeback attempt.
Â
CCU still leads the brief all-time series 3-2, but the maroon and gold has captured the last two regular-season meetings.
The victory was No. 886 in the illustrious career of TXST coach
Karen Chisum. She moves into a tie for ninth place all-time in NCAA history with former BYU great Elaine Michaelis (1969-01).
Â
Texas State will now hit the road for a pair of matches in Alabama against South Alabama and Troy. The Bobcats will face the Jaguars at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19 in Mobile, Ala., before meeting the Trojans at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20 in Troy, Ala.
