LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Texas State women's basketball team (11-6, 4-2 SBC) dropped its second Sun Belt Conference tilt of the season at Little Rock (9-8, 6-0 SBC), 63-48, on Saturday afternoon inside of the Jack Stephens Center. The loss halts Texas State's three-game winning streak inside the conference and gives the Bobcats an SBC record of 4-2.
"Our girls came into this game fatigued and it showed," head coach
Zenarae Antoine said. "Give Coach Foley and Little Rock a lot of credit. We will have to look back at the film and make corrections. Fortunately, we have a great opportunity to bounce back next week back at home."
The offense was efficient in the first quarter, jumping out to an 18-10 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
Toshua Leavitt buried a trio of 3-point attempts to start the contest, giving her nine first quarter points. Of the seven buckets the Bobcats made in the first frame, six came via the assist. TXST was able to break down the elite LR defense and find open shooters, connecting on 50.0 percent of its shots. The Bobcats also forced the Trojans into four turnovers in the first quarter.
Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the team was unable to sustain the momentum built in the first frame of action. The Trojans put the clamps on, limiting the Bobcats to just 16 points over the next two quarters combined. After being outscored 20-10 in the second quarter, TXST trailed 30-26 heading into the halftime break.
Taeler Deer sank a free throw with 4:47 left in the third quarter to bring the Bobcats within four points at 36-32. The game would never be that close again as the Trojans blew the game wide open on the strength of an 8-0 scoring run.
Leavitt paced the Bobcat offensive attack, knocking down 6-of-10 from behind the 3-point line, scoring 20 points on the evening. The junior guard has scored at least 20 points while making six or more 3-point field goals in eight contests this season. Her sixth triple of the game moved her in a tie for the most career 3-pointers made for a player at Texas State. Leavitt has made 196 treys during her career at Texas State, matching Sarah Wagner's mark during her run as a Bobcat from 1996-2000. She also played the full 40 minutes for TXST.
Deer was the only other Bobcat to eclipse 10 points against the Trojans, scoring 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting. The senior guard added two assists in 34 minutes of action.
For LR, the DeGray sisters were a thorn in the side of the Bobcat defense. Ronjanae DeGray came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points. She connected on her first nine shots of the game and went 10-of-11 overall. DeGray also grabbed four rebounds in 31 minutes off of the Trojan bench. Raeyana DeGray scored 10 points and hauled in six rebounds for the home team.
After a weekend in Arkansas, the Bobcats will be back in the friendly confines of Strahan Coliseum with a pair of games against ULM and Louisiana. Game one, against the Warhawks is slated for a 5:30 p.m. tip on Jan. 18. TXST will matchup with LA on Jan. 20 at 2 p.m.
