SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State volleyball team suffered its first five-set defeat of the year after losing to SMU 3-2 (27-29, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 16-14) Friday night inside Strahan Coliseum.

The Bobcats (5-3) saw their four-match win streak halted on the second day of the Creeds & Crests Classic, while the Mustangs improved to 5-3.

Sophomores
Megan Porter (21 digs, 14 kills) and
Amy Pflughaupt (15 digs, 13 kills) joined true freshman
Brooke Johnson (26 assists, 11 digs) with double-doubles. Senior
Jaliyah Bolden registered a career-high 12 blocks, while classmate senior
Erin Hoppe distributed 23 assists. Sophomores
Micah Dinwiddie (23) and
Mattie Adams (10) also picked up double-figure digs.
Texas State won the opening set 29-27, which featured 15 ties and seven lead changes. Neither team led by more than three points the entire way, and there were a total of five set points. TXST took advantage of its third opportunity to close out the frame with a double block from junior
Madison Daigle and true freshman
Effie Zielinski.

The Bobcats jumped on top 8-3 in the second, but a 10-3 run from SMU saw the visitors gain a 13-11 lead. Neither side led by more than two points the rest of the way until TXST won the game's final three points to claim the 25-22 triumph.

SMU's comeback began with a 25-22 victory in the third period. The Mustangs initially got ahead 10-6 and never trailed again. TXST never trailed by more than five, but the maroon and gold was also never again able to draw even.

The fourth set was all SMU as the road squad went on top 18-11 before settling for the four-point win. Texas State never led in the fifth, and the last tie came at 14-14. The Mustangs found to kills from Brittany Adams in the final two points to seal the night.

Adams (18 kills, 17 digs) and Lauren Mills (19 digs, 15 kills) had double-doubles for SMU, and Kendall Patterson (32) and Allison Hughes (20) combined for 52 assists. Kelly Brunstein added 14 kills, Montana Watts had 31 digs, Julia Dibona chipped in 12 digs and Lexi Nordmann blocked 10 attacks for the Mustangs.

SMU led the way in kills (58-57), attack percentage (.103-.094), assists (56-54), digs (91-90) and blocks (18-15). The maroon and gold finished with more service aces (4-3).
Texas State has now played four five-set matches in the last five outings. The last such stretch came late in the 2013 season.
The final day of the Creeds & Crests Classic will begin in earnest at 11 a.m. Sept. 9. TXST will host UMass Lowell before facing Houston Baptist at 5 p.m. Sandwiched between those two bouts will be a contest between SMU and UML.
