Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Texas State Beaten by Bethune-Cookman, 62-56

DELAND, Fla. – The Texas State women's basketball team (6-3) suffered its third setback of the season, losing to Bethune-Cookman (7-3), 62-56, on Wednesday afternoon in the second game from the Hatter Classic inside the Edmunds Center.

"We did not match their intensity early in the game and it cost us," said head coach Zenarae Antoine. "There are plenty of things for us to learn from this game. We were not patient, we played rushed. We rushed some shots and had some bad turnovers. The good thing is those things can and will be fixed."

The team dug an early hole, trailing 9-0 at the first media timeout. At the half, the Bobcats fell behind by a score of 28-21. As TXST was attempting to mount a comeback, the Wildcats went on a 12-0 run late in the third quarter to blow the game wide open. The BCU run was highlighted by a technical foul on Toshua Leavitt, giving Bethune two free throws and the ball. Angel Golden, the game's high scorer with 21 points, knocked down both free throw attempts and buried a 3-pointer in the corner on the ensuing in-bounds play, giving the Wildcats five quick points.

In the fourth quarter, the Bobcats once again dug deep, especially on the defensive end of the floor, to attempt a final comeback. Ti'Aira Pitts, who was held scoreless in the first three quarters, ignited a 9-0 run for the Bobcats, scoring on a low-post move and capping the run with a 3-point jumper from the top of the key. The triple brought TXST within eight points with just over five minutes left.

After a 3-pointer from BCU's Kanesha Battle, Pitts went back to work, scoring the next three points in the game. A driving lay-up and made free throw from Dabrasia Baty pulled the Bobcats within five points, unfortunately, the Bobcats were not able to inch any closer down the final stretch. Texas State outscored Bethune, 21-10, over the final 10 minutes of the game.

Brooke Holle led the Texas State offense, netting 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. The sophomore guard stuffed the stat sheet with six boards, two assists and a pair of steals. Ericka May was the only other Bobcat to reach double figures, chipping in 11 points. May also led the team with seven rebounds while also tallying a pair of assists and two steals.

After knocking down 39 3-point attempts during the most recent three-game winning streak, TXST hit just 5-of-17 (29.4-percent) attempts from behind the arc. In total, the Bobcats shot 19-of-54 (35.2-percent), the lowest percentage from the floor since the loss at TCU in mid-November. The team was 11-of-40 (27.5-percent) through the first three quarters of action.

Texas State will be right back on the floor tomorrow afternoon, squaring off with host Stetson at 1:00 p.m. EDT. The game will be streamed live on
ESPN3. Stetson is coming off of a five-point victory, 72-67, over Richmond in the first matchup of the day.
