STOCKTON, Calif. – Both the Texas State men's basketball team and Pacific shot over 60 percent from the field on Saturday night in the Alex G. Spanos Center in the Bobcats' 85-78 win in the Men Against Breast Cancer Showcase. TXST made 61.7 percent of its shots, the highest ever under head coach
Danny Kaspar.
The win sees the Bobcats improve to 3-3 on the season while the Tigers drop to 2-4.
"This was a great bounce back win from a disappointing loss last night. I was very proud of our players. However, we are still turning the ball over a little bit too much," said Kaspar. "I was glad to see so many players have good offensive games tonight."
For the third consecutive game the opposing team scored the first bucket of the game when Roberto Gallinat made a layup.
Immanuel King started the offense for TXST with a tip-in on the next trip down the court.
Pacific followed with a jumper by Jack Williams to give the home team a 4-2 advantage. That would be the last time the Tigers scored for the next 5:10 as the Bobcats went on a 13-2 run that was began with an old-fashion three-point play by King. During the stretch
Nijal Pearson scored four points and
Tyler Blount knocked down a three-pointer.
Six straight points for the Bobcats right before the final media timeout of the period gave them their largest lead of the half at 30-18. TXST took a 36-26 advantage into intermission thanks to two layups from
Eric Terry and one from King.
The Bobcats came out hot from long distance to start the second half making their first four three-point attempts. Pearson began the run with his first trey of the game. Blount followed with three straight to put TXST up 45-30, the largest lead of the game.
Pacific countered by scoring 10 straight over the next 2:29 to cut the lead to five. Terry hit a short hook shot to end the offensive drought.
The Bobcats kept making shots and free throws to push the lead around double-digits for nearly the rest of the way. The Tigers were able to make it a six-point contest after three free throws from Gallant with 27.8 left on the clock.
Tre'Larenz Nottingham iced the game with a 3-for-4 performance at the charity stripe and a big defensive rebound off a rare missed Pacific shot.
Five TXST players scored in double-figures, the most since the team also had five in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinals victory over UTA back in March. Leading the way was Pearson with a career-high tying 23 points. The sophomore was 9-for-14 from the field, 4-of-7 on three-pointers and converted his lone free throw attempt. He also grabbed five rebounds and handed out two assists.
King and Nottingham both netted 13 points apiece. The career-high tying night for King saw him go a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and knock down 3-of-5 at the charity stripe. Nottingham set a new career best in a Bobcat uniform behind a 4-for-5 performance shooting including making both of his three-point attempts.
Both Blount and Terry had 12 points each. All of Blount's made baskets came from long distance as he finished 4-of-5. The sophomore big man made did not miss any of his shots as he made all five of his shots and both free throw attempts.
Davis dished out a season-high six assists, one off his career best, and turned the ball over just once. The Houston native also blocked his first shot of the season and second of his career and recorded a steal.
Coming off the bench,
