Bobcats Hook 'Horns For First Time Since 2010

Baker, Prado, and Wiley combined for six hits in front of the second-largest crowd in school history

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A three-run home run by Taylor Webb in the fifth inning combined with timely hits and solid defense led the Texas State softball team to a 9-5 victory over No. 24 Texas at the Bobcat Softball Stadium Wednesday evening. It was the first victory over Texas since March 24, 2010 and Texas State did so in front of 1,011 fans, the second-largest attendance in school history.

"The crowd was great, the atmosphere was awesome," said head coach Ricci Woodard. "That's what you hope your players get to play in front of and to pull out the win on top of it makes for an even more exciting night. We couldn't ask for anything different."

Texas State put together 10 hits and drew seven walks en route to its third victory over a Big 12 opponent this season. The Bobcats are now 12-5 overall this season and hand Texas just its third loss of the season.

A single up the middle in the second inning with bases loaded for Quincy Charleston scored Webb to put the 'Cats up 1-0 over the Longhorns. The hit by Charleston was her first career hit at Texas State. Webb started the inning off by reaching on the Longhorn's second error of the game and moved over to third on back-to-back singles by Kendall Wiley and Bianca Prado.

Texas State held on to its 1-0 lead until the top of the fifth inning when Texas put two on the scoreboard. With two outs and the bases loaded, Texas hit a fielder's choice ball to second that ultimately resulted on all runners being safe including the game-tying run. A bloop single in the infield on the next at bat scored the second Longhorn run of the inning.

A four-pitch walk by Ariel Ortiz in the bottom half of the fifth backed by a double off the wall in centerfield by Corrina Liscano led to a Texas pitching change with no outs. Webb proceeded to capitalize on the change in the circle and hit a three-run home run to quickly make it a 4-2 ball game in favor of the 'Cats. Four-straight walks after Webb's home run led to the fourth run of the inning for Texas State.

Three more runs scored in the fifth by the Bobcats led to a seven-run inning and an 8-2 lead over Texas.

A solo shot by Wiley in the sixth made it a 9-2 ball game in favor of the 'Cats. It was her first home run this season.

The Longhorns attempted to rally in the top of the seventh as three hits led to three runs, but a pair of ground outs for the final two outs of the game granted Texas State its first win over Texas in almost six seasons. A crucial out in the top of the seventh for Texas State was the first one as it was a hard hit ground ball right back to the pitcher.

Randi Rupp earned her ninth victory of the season as she improves to 9-3 overall. Rupp registered six strikeouts in the win. Baker, Wiley, and Prado all recorded two hits each for Texas State and Webb's home run in the fifth inning was her first this season. She led the Bobcats with three RBIs.

Texas State will now travel to Clearwater, Fla. for the USF-Under Armour Invitational starting Friday. In the fourth and final tournament of the non-conference schedule, Texas State will compete against Detroit-Mercy, IPFW, Penn, Purdue and host school South Florida. First pitch against Purdue Friday morning is set for 10:30 a.m. Live stats will be available at www.txstatebobcats.com.
