SAN MARCOS, Texas – Kavin Gilder-Tilbury extended his double-digit scoring streak to 13 games in the Texas State men's basketball team's 65-53 loss to UT Arlington Tuesday night in front of a season-high 3,408 fans. Gilder-Tilbury scored a team-high 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting, grabbed four rebounds and blocked a season-high two shots.
The Bobcats drop to 9-12 overall and 3-9 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Mavericks are now 16-7 on the season and 7-5 in conference play.
In 11 minutes off the bench in the second half,
D'Angelo West scored nine points with a 2-for-4 performance from beyond the arc and making all three of his free throw attempts. He also grabbed three rebounds and handed out an assist.
Ojai Black dished out a three assists and was credited with three steals. Both
Emani Gant and
Bobby Conley grabbed six rebounds apiece to pace Texas State. With his fifth rebound of the night, Gant moved into 18th place on the program's career list and currently has 504 in his Bobcat tenure.
UTA was led by Jalen Jones' 17 points. Drew Charles netted 14 points with all four of his made baskets being three-pointers and Erick Neal contributed 10 points and three assists. Jorge Bilbao retrieved a game-high seven rebounds.
A 12-4 run in the first five minutes of the game gave the Mavericks a cushion that they would not relinquish the rest of the game. A layup from UTA's Faith Pope with 3:04 on the clock was the last points for either team until the halftime horn sounded.
Cameron Naylor led Texas State with six points in the first 20 minutes on 2-of-4 shooting and two made free throws.
In the second half, the Bobcats fell behind by 29 with 7:45 to play following a layup from Pope. Texas State responded by outscoring UTA 30-13 the rest of the game during which West scored all of his points. Capping off the scoring was
Austin Evans with a two-handed slam after receiving a pass from
Nathan Josephs with just over five seconds left in the game.
Next for the Bobcats is Appalachian State at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in Strahan Coliseum.
