BOONE, N.C. – Texas State was unable to overcome four first-half Appalachian State touchdowns and a smothering Mountaineer defense as the Bobcats fell 35-10 in Boone, N.C., Saturday afternoon.
Â
How It Happened:
- Texas State (2-6, 0-3 Sun Belt) scored on its first possession for the fourth straight game – this time counting a Marcus Ripley 25-yard field goal. The Bobcats marched 67 yards in 5:22, using 13 plays to take the 3-0 lead. Tyler Jones was 7 of 8 for 63 yards during the drive as four different receivers caught balls from the senior signal caller.  The Bobcats picked up five first downs before the drive stalled at Appalachian State's 8-yard line.
- The Bobcat defense forced a quick 3-and-out on Appalachian State's first possession of the game. However, the Mountaineers would return the favor on Texas State's next possession with a 3-and-out of its own.
- The Mountaineers (7-2, 5-0 Sun Belt) took over at their own 27 and four plays later Marcus Cox found the end zone with a 37-yard run down the left sideline. Eric Boggs converted the extra point, giving App State the 7-3 lead with 4:50 to play in the first quarter.
- Following a 3-and-out by the Bobcats, App State moved 70 yards in nine plays for its second touchdown of the game and a 14-3 lead. Jaylan Barbour capped the drive with an 8-yard reception from Taylor Lamb.
- On Texas State's next possession Jones was intercepted on third down by the Mountaineers' Eric Boggs, setting the App State offense up at the Bobcat 27-yard line. Two plays later Taylor Lamb hit Jaquil Capel for a 31-yard score and a 21-3 Mountaineer lead with 7:09 to go before the half.
- App State made it 28-3 with 1:45 remaining in the second quarter as Lamb threw his third touchdown pass of the first half – a 6-yard strike to Mock Adams. The drive was highlighted by a 61-yard run by Jalin Moore down to the Texas State 8-yard line.
- The teams traded 3-and-outs to open the second half and Texas State again forced a Mountaineer punt on App State's second possession, but this time Anthony D. Taylor blocked the punt and Mason Hays fell on the loose ball at the App State 2. Stedman Mayberry scored on a one-yard plunge on second-and-goal, cutting the Mountaineers' lead to 28-10 with 5:01 elapsed in the third quarter.
- The Mountaineers responded immediately with a touchdown to take a 35-10 advantage. Lamb capped nine-play, 74-yard drive with a three-yard TD pass to Barrett Burns.
- Texas State then put together a 17 play drive that moved the ball from its own 22 to the App State 4. However, the Bobcats would come away without points as Jones' pass on fourth-and-goal went incomplete. The drive produced seven first downs and was highlighted by a 16-yard Mason Hays reception as the sophomore was upended by an App State defender.
- Neither team crossed midfield the remainder of the game.
