SAN MARCOS, Texas – Senior quarterback Tyler Jones threw for Texas State records of 475 yards and five touchdowns as the Bobcats scored seven touchdowns and amassed 670 yards of offense to defeat Incarnate Word 48-17 Saturday evening at Bobcat Stadium.
How It Happened:
- Texas State converted two first downs on its opening drive, but the series would stall in Incarnate Word territory. The Cardinals took full advantage of the stop and six plays later found the end zone as Broderick Reeves broke loose for a 47-yard touchdown run. Cody Seidel converted the extra point for the 7-0 Cardinal lead with 9:36 to go in the first quarter.
- The Bobcats' fourth drive of the evening moved 76 yards in nine plays. However, the Incarnate Word defense stiffened in the red zone and blocked a 31-yard James Sherman field goal attempt.
- An 11-yard Tyler Jones to Gabe Schrade scoring strike capped a nine-play, 55-yard drive. Sherman split the uprights, knotting the game at 7-7 with 10:02 to play before the half. Jones was 5 of 5 for 49 yards on the drive, while also accounting for two yards on the ground.
- The Bobcat defense then forced its second straight three-and-out, giving the ball quickly back to the TXST offense. Jones wasted little time moving the offense 81 yards for the score. Jones started with a 25-yard connection to Thurman Morbley, then three plays later again found Morbley behind the Cardinals defense on a post route for a 44-yard TD strike.
- Incarnate Word answered with points of its own as Seidel knocked through a 22-yard field goal to culminate an 11-play, 70-yard drive. The Cardinals moved inside the Bobcat 10-yard line, but a series of miscues and a dropped pass in the end zone left the visitors with the field goal attempt.
- Texas State added to its lead with a 16-yard Eric Luna TD reception with 15 seconds to go in the first half. The Bobcats started the drive at their own 21 with 3:06 showing on the clock. Jones threw for 69 yards during the drive, completing 7 of 8 attempts.
- The Bobcats entered the break with 344 yards of total offense, with 289 of those yards and all three scores through the air.
- Texas State's Javante O'Roy intercepted Incarnate Word's Taylor Laird on the first snap of the second half; however, the Bobcats would be unable to take advantage of the plus field position.
- Jones counted his fourth TD of the evening, giving Texas State a 28-10 lead in the process, on an 11-yard connection to Schrade. The junior tight end came free in the right side of the end zone on a drag route after hauling in a 31-yard reception the play before.
- Tyler Siudzinski made the score 34-10 in the Bobcats' favor with a 3-yard plunge, his first score of the season, with 3:07 remaining in the third.
- With 8:06 remaining in regulation, Incarnate Word's Desmond Hite cut the Texas State in half (34-17) with a 71-yard touchdown run down the left sideline.
- Jones set the Bobcat single game passing record along with his personal TD record on Texas State's second drive of the fourth quarter. Jones completed three passes for 63 yards during the drive, including his 46-yard touchdown toss to P.J. Anderson.
- Brendon Rushing provided the 48-17 final with a 65-yard reception from backup quarterback Eddie Printz in the waning seconds of the game.
