TROY, Ala. - Four players reached double figures for the Texas State men's basketball team Saturday afternoon but the team fell 66-57 to Troy in the Trojan Arena.
Emani Gant led the way with a 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Both
Kavin Gilder-Tilbury and
Cameron Naylor added 12 points.
Ethan Montalvo contributed 10 points with two three-pointers.
The Bobcats are is now 8-6 overall and 2-3 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Trojans improved to 6-11 and 1-5 in conference play.
Ojai Black tied his career-high with five assists and did not commit a turnover in 34 minutes of action.
Maljhum McCrea and
Kendell Ramlal recorded a block apiece.
As a team, Texas State made 22-of-52 (42.3 percent) shots from the field including six treys. The Cats struggled at the free throw line, going 7-for-12 (58.3 percent). They won the turnover battle by three and outscored the Trojans 16-10 off them.
Troy was led by Wesley Person's 23. John Walton III recorded a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Also reaching double figures was Jeremy Hollimon with 13 points, all in the second half. The Trojans dominated the glass with 38 rebounds to the Bobcats' 23 that resulted in a 16-8 advantage in second chance points.
As they have the last couple of games, Troy started the game hot offensively to begin with an 11-2 run. Gilder-Tilbury then scored seven straight points including a three-pointer at the top of the arc to beat the shot clock. An old-fashion three-point play by Gant gave the Bobcats a 12-11 lead.
After trading the lead a couple of times, Naylor made a free throw to put Texas State in front 24-23. The Trojans answered back with a three to take a two-point advantage on their next possession.
Naylor hit a long jumper at the 1:28 mark to tie the game 26-26. However, Troy scored the last four points before halftime.
A drive down the lane resulted in a layup for Black and cut Texas State's deficit to 34-32 almost three minutes into the second half. The Trojans responded with an 11-4 scoring burst to a 12-point advantage.
Following a timeout, the Bobcats scored seven straight with Naylor accounting for five pull to within 48-43 a little over halfway thru the period. That is as close as the Cats got the rest of the game.
K.J. Malveau made a trey late in the game to cut the final score to single digits.
Texas State returns home to take on SBC leading Little Rock at 7:30 p.m. in Strahan Coliseum on Thursday.
