MONROE, La. - The Texas State men's basketball team heads into the final game of the regular season with still much to play for, after qualifying for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Thursday night. The Bobcats face ULM, and can come away from Saturday's game as either the No. 6, 7 or 8 seed in the conference tournament.
This is the second meeting of the season between the Bobcats and Warhawks. ULM won the first meeting 62-59 at Strahan Coliseum back in January. Texas State came back from a 16-point deficit and had a chance to tie the game in the final minute, but couldn't get the shots to fall.
Scouting ULM
ULM is locked in as the No. 3 seed in the Sun Belt Tournament. The Warhawks come into Saturday's game with a record of 19-10 overall. The team is led by senior Tylor Ongwae who is averaging 14.2 points per game and 7.0 rebounds.
Senior center Marvin Williams is out for the season with an injury. Williams was unstoppable in the first meeting this season, going 9-of-9 from the field for 18 points.
Scenarios for Seeding
Below are the scenarios for how the Bobcats could be either the No. 6, 7 or 8 seed, depending on outcomes of games with South Alabama and Appalachian State. Appalachian State is not eligible for the conference tournament but is eligible for a regular season championship, thus its place in the standings is used to break ties.
1. APP: Win, USA: Win, TXST: Win
a. South Alabama is the #6 Seed based on 9-11 conference record
b. Texas State (8-12) is the #7 seed over UALR (8-12) because it would then own a 1-1 record vs. ULM
c. UALR the #8 seed
2. APP: Win, USA: Win, TXST: Loss
a. South Alabama is the #6 seed based on 9-11 conference record
b. UALR is the #7 seed based on 8-12 conference record
c. Texas State is the #8 seed based on 7-13 conference record
3. APP: Win, USA: Loss, TXST: Loss
a. UALR is the #6 seed based on a 1-1 record vs. Georgia State
b. South Alabama is the #7 seed based on 8-12 conference record
c. Texas State is the #8 seed based on 7-13 conference record
4. APP: Win, USA: Loss, TXST: Win
a. Texas State wins the tiebreaker based on a 3-1 record vs. UALR & USA and is the #6 seed
b. USA is the #7 seed based on a 2-0 record vs. UALR
c. UALR is the #8 seed
5. APP: Loss, USA: Win, TXST: Win
a. South Alabama is the #6 seed based on 9-11 conference record
b. APP, UALR and TXST can be broken head-to-head (APP: 2-2, UALR: 3-1, TXST: 1-3). UALR is the #7 seed.
c. Texas State is the #8 seed
6. APP: Loss, USA: Win, TXST: Loss
a. South Alabama is the #6 seed based on 9-11 conference record
b. UALR is the #7 seed based on 8-12 conference record
c. Texas State is the #8 seed based on 7-13 conference record

b. UALR is the #7 seed
c. Texas State is the #8 seed based on 7-13 conference record
8. APP: Loss, USA: Loss, TXST: Win
a. 4-way tie between all teams. Everyone is 3-3 in the head-to-head matchups. The tie cannot be broken with records against GS or GSU because all teams are 0-2 vs. GS and multiple teams have 1-1 records vs. GSU. It moves to games against UL Monroe where multiple teams have records of 1-1. It moves to records against UL Lafayette, where South Alabama is 2-0 this season and everyone else is 0-2. South Alabama is the #6 seed based on that 2-0 record vs. UL-L.
b. 3-way tie between APP, UALR and TXST. UALR wins the tiebreaker based on a 3-1 record vs. the other two (APP: 2-2, TXST: 1-3). UALR is the #7 seed.
