NEW ORLEANS – The Texas State men's basketball team had its season end on Friday night to the No. 4 seed, UL Lafayette, 53-43 at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans.Â
The two teams went back and forth during the first 20 minutes, which had five lead changes and two ties. Texas State grabbed the lead twice off three-point baskets, one by Wes Davis which gave the team an 8-7 lead and the other by D.J. Brown, giving the Bobcats a 19-18 advantage. Neither team was able to shoot the ball well in the first half, as the Bobcats went 6-of-23 to start while UL Lafayette was 5-of-23.Â
The Bobcats led at the half 21-18, marking the seventh time this season they've held an opponent to 18 points or fewer in a half. Texas State finished the half shooting 26.9 percent, while UL Lafayette was just at 17.9 percent and didn't score in the final 7:12 of the first half.Â
Kavin Gilder-Tilbury gave Texas State a huge jolt to start the second half. He hit a left wing three and was fouled on the play to give the Bobcats a 25-20 lead, part of a 6-0 run. Texas State eventually pushed its lead to as much as 32-23.Â
The Ragin Cajuns responded by going on a 19-3 run to take a 42-35 lead with 7:28 to go. The Bobcats had a combination of foul trouble and turnovers plague them during the run.Â
Texas State responded by going on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to three and Wes Davis got to the free throw line for a 1-and-1. Unfortunately, he missed the free throw and the Cajuns responded by stretching their lead back to seven with 3:17 to go.Â
Texas State ended the season 14-17, a six win improvement over last season and had its lowest points allowed per game average since 1982-83, giving up just 60.0 points per game.
