SAN MARCOS, Texas – UT Arlington used an 11-2 run to open the second half and never looked back as the Mavericks defeated the Bobcats 70-61 Thursday night at Strahan Coliseum.
"It's a very disappointing outcome," head coach Danny Kaspar said. "We gave up 70 points on our home floor. They shoot 52 percent and I don't want to take anything away from them."
JaMarcus Weatherspoon tried to bring the Bobcats back, scoring all 12 of his points in the second half. He hit a baseline jumper with 7:04 to go which cut the lead to 56-63. Unfortunately that is as close as the Bobcats would get as UTA went on an 8-2 run to stretch the lead back out for good.
Wes Davis led the Bobcats early on with 10 first half points, including two three-pointers. It was the first time Wes has hit two threes in a game since hitting threes to force overtime at Arkansas State back in January.
Emani Gant joined Davis and Weatherspoon with a game-high 12 points. He also had seven rebounds to lead the team and got to the free throw line six times in the second half, helping the Bobcats stay within striking distance.
Texas State will next be in front of a nationwide audience as it takes on Georgia State at 11 a.m. on ESPN 2. The radio broadcast is available on 89.9 FM KTSW and txstatebobcats.com/radio.
