SAN MARCOS, Texas – Senior guard
Ethan Montalvo totaled eight steals to tie the Texas State single game record in the team's 76-53 victory over I-35 rival UTSA Wednesday night in Strahan Coliseum. The Omaha, Nebraska native is the fourth player to reach the mark in school history and the first since Wesley Davis accomplished the feat on Jan. 28, 2012 against UT Arlington.
Texas State improves to 3-1 on the season while the Roadrunners lost their fourth straight to drop to 1-7 this year.
As a team, the Bobcats forced UTSA into 26 turnovers in which 14 were the result of a steal. Along with Montalvo,
Emani Gant and
Anthony Roberson had a multiple steal night with three and two, respectively.
Gant scored a game-high 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
Kavin Gilder-Tilbury added 15 points and set a new career-high with six assists. In his second straight start of the season, Roberson finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
Cameron Naylor came off the bench to contribute 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting and making all four of his free throw attempts.
After an opening basket from the Roadrunners, Texas State scored eight straight points that began with two put backs by Roberson. Gant capped off the scoring stretch with a swipe and slam. The Bobcats never looked back, leading the rest of the game.
Montalvo dished out a behind the back pass to Naylor for a dunk to increase Texas State's lead to 62-34 with 7:48 left to play for its largest lead of the night.
Next up for Texas State is a road contest against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. Saturday night in the American Bank Center.
