SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State followed Thursday night's big victory over defending Sun Belt Conference Champion Little Rock with an impressive sweep of Georgia Southern on Saturday, 25-21, 25-19, 25-17. With the win, the Bobcats are 5-1 in SBC action and 10-8 on the season.
Saturday, the Bobcats used a balanced attack to thwart the Eagles.
Haley Henderson led the team with eight kills, but six Bobcats finished with four kills or more with six each from
Morgan Lewis and
Jordan Kohl and five apiece for
Lauren Kirch and
Kelsey Weynand.
While Texas State split up the offensive attack, the defense at the net was all Lewis. She was in on nine of Texas State's 10 blocks to tally the most blocks by a Bobcat so far this season. With her six kills, she led Texas State in points with 10.5 and helped Texas State double up Georgia Southern in blocks, 10-5.
Texas State split up the setting duties against Georgia Southern with
Erin Hoppe giving out 17 assists and
Emily Shelton handing out 13 assists. Shelton added a kill and three digs while Hoppe finished with five digs.
Sierra Smith tallied 18 digs to average 6.0 digs per set to add to her 6.5 digs per set average on Thursday in a strong bid for the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Saturday,
Shelby Vas Matt added 15 digs for a 5.0 digs per set average herself.
At home this week, the Bobcats have shown plenty of hustle. Late in Saturday's match,
Kelsey Weynand made a play that may best exemplify Texas State's relentless effort in the last two matches. After a dig went awry, headed out of bounds on Georgia Southern's side, Weynand hustled over to not only get it across to help the Bobcats keep the point alive, but jumped back into position to help put down a block for a Texas State point. She finished with four blocks.
In the final set of the match, Texas State would not be denied, putting down 16 kills to just three errors on 41 attempts for a match-high .317 hitting percentage.
The Bobcats will host UT Arlington in a rivalry match next. The teams will meet at Strahan Coliseum at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
