SAN MARCOS, Texas – D.J. Brown hit the first game winner of his career, a three-point shot from the right wing, giving the Texas State men's basketball team a 77-74 win in double overtime over UALR, Thursday night at Strahan Coliseum.Â
"Coach called the play, for me to come up the sideline and try to find somebody," Brown said. "I felt like they were having good pressure, and usually when we hand the ball off, they show. I saw they thought I was going to hand it off, and I just saw the opportunity and took it."Â
The Bobcats needed some heroics to get to double overtime, beginning with an 8-0 run towards the end of regulation after UALR had taken a 50-42 advantage with 3:24 to go. Ethan Montalvo would get the Bobcats back in the game, thanks to clutch free throw shooting, making four straight, cutting it to a four-point game with 3:07 to go.Â
Emani Gant then went on a 4-0 run of his own to tie the game at 50-50 with 1:35 to go after two made free throws and a layup, before Montalvo had more magic. He came off a screen and hit a straight-away three to make it 53-52 with 1:00 to go.Â
Following UALR's basket, Brown then hit a layup and converted on an and-1 to take a 56-54 lead, before UALR tied it with two seconds to go to force overtime.
The Trojans raced ahead in the first overtime, getting a 65-61 lead with 1:28 to go. Kavin Gilder-Tilbury responded by attacking the basket and making four straight free throws of his own to make it a 65-65 game with 36 seconds to go and UALR missed the final shot sending it to double overtime.
It was the first time Texas State has played back-to-back double overtime games in school history. The Bobcats won in double OT on Monday at Georgia State by the same score of 77-74.
Texas State looked to be comfortably ahead in double OT, up 74-69 with a minute to go, following Tilbury's steal and fastbreak layup in which he drew the foul to make it a five-point advantage. Unfortunately Josh Hagins of UALR hit a three, tying the game with six seconds to go before Brown's buzzer beater.
Down 4-0 to start the game, Texas State went on an 11-0 run to take the lead. Brown keyed the run with two right wing three-pointers and a steal underneath the baseline.
The two teams traded baskets for the majority of the half until Texas State wowed the fans in the final minute of the period.
First, Wes Davis moved into third place all-time in Texas State history with a pair of steals, and his second resulted in a lob on the fast break to Kavin Gilder-Tilbury for a layup, to put the team up 25-18 with 43 seconds to go in the half
Brown then capped the first half in spectacular fashion by splitting a double team in the lane and laid the ball in with five seconds to go. Then he stole the inbounds pass and lobbed a pass to Cameron Naylor who had his attempt fall just short.
Brown finished the first half with eight points, three steals and three rebounds to help the Bobcats to a 27-20 lead at half. It marked the eighth half this year the team has allowed 20 points or fewer in a half.
He was the team's leading scorer with 16 points on 3-of-6 from three-point range, along with four assists and three steals.
The Bobcats will continue their current three-game home stand on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., when it hosts ULM. Saturday's game will be broadcast on 89.9 FM KTSW and online at www.txstatebocats.com/radio.
