Women's Hoops Fall In Double OT To UL Lafayette

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's basketball team fell in double-overtime Saturday afternoon by a score of 83-81 to UL Lafayette at Strahan Coliseum. Junior guard Erin Peoples matched a career-high 23 points in the defeat as the Bobcats fall to 12-8 overall and 7-4 in the Sun Belt Conference.

It was only the second regular season game in program history to go into double-overtime, the first occurring back in 1986 when the Bobcats fell to Baylor by an 86-84 margin.

The Bobcats got out of the gates on a 5-0 run as they made the first two baskets of the contest.

Texas State continued to extend its lead early, going up by as many as eight with 10:15 until the break.

At that point, UL Lafayette stormed back and rattled off a 13-0 run to take over the lead for the first time. A three-pointer by Taeler Deer halted the Ragin' Cajuns run.

The remainder of the half proved to be a back-and-forth battle as the Ragin' Cajuns went into the break up two on Texas State, 26-24.

Just as the Bobcats produced an eight-point lead in the first, UL Lafayette did the same in the second as the Ragin' Cajuns used an 11-5 run to go up 37-29 over Texas State with 15:05 on the clock.

Texas State clawed its way back into the game over the course of the next seven minutes, outscoring UL Lafayette 18-8 to regain the lead. A three-pointer by Jacqueline Jeffcoat capped the Bobcat run.

With three seconds remaining on the clock and down two, Peoples hit a lay-up from Deer to tie up the game and force it into overtime.

The Bobcats found themselves up five with 3:11 remaining in the first overtime, but back-to-back baskets by the Ragin' Cajuns tied the game up. The teams exchanged baskets until the end including a jumper by Anderson with seven seconds to tie it up once again.
After back-and-forth play to start the second overtime, the Ragin' Cajuns took over the lead for the final time with 1:45 on the clock. That lead for UL Lafayette extended to as many as seven points before a lay-up by Deer and a three-pointer at the buzzer by Ericka May brought the Bobcats within two.

Despite shooting 43.1 percent from the floor, 42.1 percent from beyond the arc and 81 percent from the charity stripe, the Bobcats were outrebounded by the Ragin' Cajuns 55-41. Texas State recorded one more defensive rebound than the visiting Cajuns, but 25 offensive rebounds provided for 13 second chance points for UL Lafayette compared to just 10 offensive boards for the Bobcats.

Along with her floor-high 23 points, Peoples led the Bobcats with nine rebounds. Anderson finished the game with 15, Deer finished with 14, Jeffcoat ended with 13, and May recorded 10 to round out the double-digit Bobcat scorers. Peoples also finished the afternoon going 11-for-12 from the charity stripe.

The Bobcats will now hit the road for a pair contests beginning with a game Wednesday against South Alabama. Tip-off against the Jaguars is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. in Mobile, Ala. Live stats, live audio, and live video will be available at www.txstatebobcats.com. A live broadcast of the game will be streamed on 89.9 FM KTSW.
