Bobcats Fall to Mavericks 66-55

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team played another tight game, before falling to UT Arlington 66-55, Monday night at the College Park Center. The Bobcats fell to 4-4 in Sun Belt Conference play and 10-7 overall.

The game was within three at 57-54 with two minutes to go, when the Bobcats went cold from the field. The team missed its last four shots and had a turnover down the stretch as the game went from three to the final margin of 11.

JaMarcus Weatherspoon stood out for the Bobcats, having a career-high 10 rebounds, the most of any player on either team to go along with eight points. His layup with 3:17 to go, gave the team a brief 53-52 lead before faltering down the stretch.

Texas State responded to an early UT Arlington spurt with an 11-2 run of its own. Ojai Black collected a steal and then hit a left wing three to give the Bobcats a 13-12 lead. It was Black's first three of the season.

The Bobcats were plagued by rebounding of the Mavericks for the majority of the first half, allowing UT Arlington 10 offensive rebounds were turned into 13-second chance points. For UTA, they were plagued by turnovers with eight compared to just six for Texas State.

Ethan Montalvo had the biggest bucket of the half for the Bobcats right before halftime. With the clock running down, he hoisted a three over two Maverick defenders to make the deficit just 30-28 after the first 20 minutes.

Down 49-42, the Bobcats went on a 7-0 run themselves to tie the game at 49-49 with 5:28 to go thanks to Weatherspoon free throws and a D.J. Brown three-pointer, who was one of two Bobcats in double digits with 10 points. Emani Gant was the other, finishing with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting.

The Bobcats will return home to begin a three-game home stand on Thursday night at 7:30 against Georgia Southern at Strahan Coliseum. Thursday's game will be available on radio on 89.9 FM KTSW and online at www.txstatebocats.com/radio.
