SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team had its best three-point shooting night of the season, going 10-of-17, to win 82-71 over South Alabama Thursday night at Strahan Coliseum, in San Marcos.Â
"I thought we won the game because of two reasons," head coach Danny Kaspar said. "First we shot the three well and we outrebounded them by eight, with 15 offensive rebounds. Obviously Emani had a good game offensively. Kendell Ramlal did a good job on the boards for us tonight. I thought Ethan and Vic Bermudez had tremendous games for us tonight as far as shooting the basketball."Â
Ethan Montalvo impressed in his first start of the season, going 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and 2-of-3 from the line for 14 points. He also added four assists and two steals. One of his assists was the play of the game, as he stole the ball and led a 2-on-1 fast break with Emani Gant. Montalvo threw a behind-the-back pass to Gant who flushed it home for the dunk.Â
For Gant it was his second fast break dunk of the night, with his first coming in the opening minutes as he got a steal and then went down the court by himself before throwing it home. Gant scored 18 of his career-high 22 points in the first half, as the Bobcats took a 38-34 lead into halftime.Â
Bermudez helped the Bobcat three-point attack in the second half, going 2-of-3. He was 3-of-4 from the field overall, and helped Texas State to go 31-of-58 as a team. The Bobcats took 58 shots on the night compared to just 37 for South Alabama.Â
"I'm really happy for Vic," Kaspar said. "He's a captain on our team and has had a great attitude, despite not playing some games. I'm very happy to see him have some success."Â
The Bobcats will next head on the road for a two-game road trip, beginning Saturday at 7:05 p.m., against Arkansas State. Saturday's game will be televised on ESPN3 and on radio on 89.9 FM KTSW and online at www.txstatebocats.com/radio.
