Women's Basketball Downs ULM Saturday Afternoon

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's basketball team battled through 20 lead changes Saturday afternoon to come away with a 70-64 victory over UL Monroe at Strahan Coliseum.

Erin Peoples led the Bobcats with a floor-high 19 points as they improve to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in Sun Belt Conference play. Fourteen of Peoples points came in the second half for Texas State.

The start of the game was a true back-and-forth affair as the teams exchanged baskets through the first seven minutes. With a tie game at 12-all, the Bobcats rattled of their first run of the contest, a 9-2 run, to go up 21-14 on the visiting Warhawks.

After obtaining a nine-point, 26-17 lead with 6:50 left in the first, the Bobcat defense struggled to contain a rallying ULM squad as the Warhawks produced a 7-0 run to come within two of Texas State. That run was halted when Whitney Apari saw Jacqueline Jeffcoat open inside for a lay-up with 3:00 left before the break.

Both teams in the first half shot above 40.0 percent from the floor, led by ULM with a mark of 44.0 percent. Meghan Braeuer and Jacqueline Jeffcoat led the Bobcats and everyone on the floor with eight points each in the first half.

A 6-1 run to open the second half granted ULM its first lead since the 15:11 mark in the first half. Braeuer answered the run with a 15-foot jumper as the Bobcats regained the lead.

The lead continued to bounce back-and-forth between the squads through the heart of the second half. There were a total of 16 lead changes in the second before ULM tied up the contest at 64-64 with 1:01 left in regulation.

Tied at 64, Raven Burns nailed her second three-pointer of the contest to give Texas State its final lead of the day. Texas State proceeded to tack on three more points (free throws from Ayriel Anderson and Braeuer) to put the nails in the coffin and come away with the home victory.

Texas State finished the contest shooting 41.9 percent from the floor and 75.0 percent from the charity stripe. Anderson led all players on the floor with seven assists and Kileah Mays, Anderson, and Ericka May each added a pair of steals for Texas State.

Texas State will return to Strahan Coliseum for one more game during this home stand next Thursday against South Alabama. Tip-time against the Jaguars is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Live stats, live audio, and live video will be available at www.txstatebobcats.com. A live broadcast of the game will be aired on 89.9 FM KTSW.
