Bobcats Split Final Day of Delta Zeta Classic

Brooke Smith hits .500 on the day

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State split the final day of the Delta Zeta Classic, sweeping Abilene Christian (25-21, 26-24, 25-18) but falling to North Texas in three (25-23, 26-24, 26-24). The Bobcats come out of the weekend at .500 with a 4-4 record.
 
Against ACU, Texas State was dominant. Kelsey Weynand followed her 17-kill performance against UTSA with 15 more kills on a .379 hitting percentage against ACU to lead all players. Brooke Smith struck nine kills with a .500 percentage in offensive support while Jordan Moore gave out 35 assists.
 
Smith added a team-high five blocks to help Texas State outblock the Wildcats, 8-7. Libero Sierra Smith led the team with 13 digs while Shelby Vas Matt, Alexandra Simms and Weynand all tallied 10 digs each.
 
Both Weynand and Sierra Smith made the Delta Zeta Classic All-Tournament Team. Weynand showed why with 10 kills in the final match of the day against North Texas. Smith added 18 digs.
 
Lauren Kirch led the team against UNT with 14 kills, but Brooke Smith had another efficient match, hitting .500 with just one error for 10 kills. Vas Matt added 14 digs while Weynand notched a solo block with two assisted.
 
Ali Gonzales has been a sparkplug for the Bobcats in the early part of the season and was able to do it again at times against North Texas. She led Texas Statein assists with 26 and added six digs. Sophomore transfer Brenna Lyles also saw her first action in a Bobcat uniform.
 
The Bobcats will look to move above .500 with a match against Prairie View A&M at 6:30 p.m. in Strahan Coliseum Tuesday night. After that, Texas State heads to Lubbock to face Texas Tech, Incarnate Word and Gardner-Webb in the Texas Tech Invitational.
