Tournament CentralSAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State split on the first day of the Delta Zeta Classic, falling to Wichita State, 3-2, but the Bobcats bounced back in a big way with a 3-1 victory over UTSA, a team receiving votes in national polls (26-24, 19-25, 25-18, 25-23).

Texas State outlasted UTSA in the first set, 26-24, but the Roadrunners rebounded in the second. The Bobcats took control in the third and followed the lead set by
Sierra Smith and
Kelsey Weynand in the fourth set.

In that set alone, Smith tallied nine digs. She finished the night with 26. Meanwhile,
Weynand tallied five kills in the fourth and finished with a team-high 17 kills. The duo carried the Bobcats through the fourth.

Shelby Vas Matt made it another double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs while
Alexandra Simms finished with a double-double of her own (12 kills, 11 digs), and led the Bobcat effort at the net with four blocks.
Amanda Watkins had three.. In addition to Smith's defensive performance, she also served up three of Texas State's seven aces. The Roadrunners only had three as a team.

Running the show offensively was
Jordan Moore. She gave out 41 assists in the match to keep the Texas State offense rolling.

The Bobcats took Wichita State to the edge in the opening match of the day, falling to the Shockers in five, 26-24, 29-31, 22-25, 25-19, 15-9.

Texas State fell in a close first set and persevered to win 31-29 in the second set. The Bobcats carried that momentum to a 25-22 third-set win, but Wichita State bounced back in the fourth with a 25-19 win and ultimately took the match with a 15-9 fifth-set win.

Freshman
Lauren Kirch continues to put together an impressive freshman season as she led all players with 17 kills in the match with a steady hitting percentage of .333. Simms added 14 while Vas Matt notched another double-double with 11 kills and 24 digs.
Keeley Davis and Watkins added nine kills apiece while freshman
Jordan Kohl put down five kills in her first action of the season.

Moore carried most of the setting duties, finishing with 40 assists, nine digs, two aces and two blocks, but
Ali Gonzales added 14 assists and seven digs. Meanwhile, Smith led Texas State with 27 digs, and Davis added 10 more.

At the net, both teams tallied eight blocks. Watkins led the way for Texas State with four, one solo, while Kirch added three block assists. Vas Matt and Simms each added two.

On the final day of the Delta Zeta Classic, the Bobcats take on Abilene Christian at 2 p.m. and North Texas at 7 p.m.
