Bobcats and Trojans Battle for Tourney Berth

San Marcos, Texas –
The Texas State men's basketball team is playing a winner take all game on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., against Troy at Trojan Arena. The winner of the game will be the No. 8 seed in the Sun Belt Tournament and the loser will see its season end.

Texas State 73, Troy 65 (Jan. 25, 2014)

The Texas State men's basketball team won its second Sun Belt Conference game of the season, Saturday, defeating Troy 73-65. With the win, the Bobcats moved into eighth place in the league.

The Bobcats gained firm control of the game, early in the second half. Leading 40-37, the Bobcats went on a 13-2 run to take a 53-39 lead with 13:25 to go. During the run, The Bobcats were led by Phil Hawkins and Emani Gant who scored helped the team pull away. Hawkins started the spurt with a right wing three before cutting to the lane to give the Bobcats a 12-point advantage at the time.

Gant scored four of his second half 16 points during the streak, and finished the night with a career-best 21 points to lead the team. Gant also had five rebounds and four assists. His highlight of the night came in the first minute of the second half when he got an offensive rebound from a missed Joel Wright jumper and flushed it down to bring the crowd to its feet.

Looking at the Bobcats

Texas State is coming off a 63-53 loss to South Alabama. The Bobcats used runs in the second half to get it down to four before the Jaguars closed it out..

Joel Wright continued his hot play of late, scoring 21 points and adding nine rebounds. He also had three blocks, tying Kendell Ramlal for the team-high in blocks on the night. As a team, the Bobcats had 10 blocks, a season-high.

Looking at the Jaguars

Troy comes into Saturday's game 10-19 and 5-12 in the Sun Belt. The Trojans feature two top-20 scores in the Sun Belt in Hunter Williams (13.8) and Antoine Myers (12.0). In the first game against the Bobcats, it was Wes Hinton who did the damage, scoring 24 points and Williams added 18.

Troy has played very well at home as it is the only team in the Sun Belt Conference to defeat Georgia State. The Trojans beat the Panthers 85-81 at Trojan Arena on Feb. 15.
