Bobcats Nearly Complete Comeback vs. Eagles

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State football team played a near-complete game on both offense and defense, just coming up short in its bid to upset Sun Belt Conference leader Georgia Southern, falling 28-25 Saturday night at Bobcat Stadium.

"Well that was a tough game. I'm proud of the kids," head coach Dennis Franchione said. "They got down but they battled and they kept battling. You know, that's the same thing every week for us it's just this week we came up a play or two short. Four out of the last five we made one extra play and tonight we didn't quite get it done. We certainly had a lot of opportunities in the game."

One of the turning points in the game came on the last play of the third quarter. Down 21-10, the Bobcats went for it on 4th-and-goal from the Georgia Southern 1-yard line. Tyler Jones attempted to find a quick route in the flat, but Matt Dobson intercepted the pass and returned 100 yards for a 28-10 lead.

"We ran one of our plays that we thought would work," Jones said. "I got some pressure and thought a guy was going to come off late and didn't come, I threw it where I thought he was going to be and he made a great play and took it to the house."

Texas State rallied back in the fourth quarter to make it 28-25. First Jones found Lawrence White in the back corner of the end zone to make it a one-score game at 28-23. He then converted a 2-point conversion by scrambling up the middle, getting the score within 28-25.  Unfortunately, for the Bobcats, Georgia Southern recovered the ensuing onside kick.

Will Johnson provided some fireworks before that score, as he recovered his own onside kick that followed Robert Lowe's touchdown run with 6:20 to go. Texas State then drove it down to the Eagles' 30 before Georgia Southern stopped the Bobcats on 4th-and-1.

The Bobcats will next be in action on Saturday, Nov. 8, at South Alabama. Kickoff time and television coverage will be decided early next week. You can also hear the game on the Texas State radio network on 105.3 FM in Austin and 89.9 FM in San Marcos.
