SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team won its exhibition game over Texas Wesleyan 76-57, Friday night at Strahan Coliseum. Junior forward Emani Gant led the Bobcats with 16 points and seven rebounds.Â
Texas State began the game on an 11-0 run, highlighted by Gant's spin move to the baseline, ending in a dunk. The dunk was two of the Bobcats' 32 points in the paint.
The Bobcat fans saw many of the team's new players on Friday night, as the team has nine newcomers on this year's roster. JaMarcus Weatherspoon and Ethan Montalvo stood out amongst the newcomers with 13 and 10 points respectively. Weatherspoon had five rebounds four assists and three steals to go along with his 13 points. Nine of Montalvo's 10 points came from the three-point arc, including a step-back triple with 32 seconds to go to put the Bobcats up 19 points.
The other player to reach double digits on the night was senior Wes Davis who had 11 points and three steals. Davis will enter next week's season opener fourth all-time on the Texas State leaderboard in steals with 134.
Defensively, Texas State held Texas Wesleyan to just 38.0 percent from the field. Last year the Bobcats had their third best defensive season since 1983, when it allowed just 66.0 points per game, something the team is looking to build on this year.
The Bobcats will open the season against former WAC opponent Seattle, next Friday at 9 p.m., central time. Texas State went 3-0 vs. the Redhawks two years ago, including a win in the conference tournament 68-56.Â
