Texas State Renews I-35 Rivalry with UTSA

Game Notes

SAN MARCOS,
Texas – Texas State Volleyball heads to San Antonio Friday for the first installment of the I-35 Rivalry against UTSA of the 2013-14 season. The Bobcats boast a 52-13 record over UTSA all-time in volleyball and will be looking to make it an even 40-match advantage Friday night at 6 p.m. in the Convocation Center.

The Bobcats are looking to bounce back from a tough loss against Texas Tech Tuesday night. Texas State led 2-0 in the match before the Red Raiders fought back to win the match.

Last time UTSA and Texas State met, the Bobcats won a five-setter behind the work of Alexandra Simms and Amari Deardorff. Both hitters finished with 16 kills in the match while Deardorff did it with a .333 hitting percentage. Dangerous setter Caylin Mahoney doubled up in the match with 11 kills on a .370 hitting percentage and 25 assists along with six digs while Ashlee Hilbun was in on six of Texas State's seven blocks in the match.

So far, the Roadrunners look strong in 2013 with a 7-4 record after starting out 0-2. After losses against LSU and San Diego State, UTSA bounced back with wins against UC Davis and Lamar. After dropping, 3-0, to Florida, the Roadrunners rebounded with a 3-1 win over Loyola Marymount before Texas A&M swept them. After that loss on Sept. 6, UTSA went on a four-match win streak with 3-1 wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UT Arlington and sweeps against TAMUCC again and Mississippi Valley State.

The Bobcats face UTSA in the team's return home after a four-match road trip. The Roadrunners haven't played in front of their home crowd since the loss against Texas A&M.

Texas State will have to be aware of UTSA's top offensive threat, McKenzie Adams. Adams has 219 kills, good enough for 5.47 kills per set. The nearest Roadrunner only has 82 kills. The Bobcat block will be set up across from Adams most of the night while UTSA has to guard against a more balanced attack from Texas State.
