San Marcos, Texas – Texas State Volleyball put on two impressive performances on the opening day of the Delta Zeta Classic, sweeping former Southland Conference foe Lamar (25-10, 25-16, 25-11) and taking down SMU in, 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 26-28, 25-22).
The usual suspects showed out for the Bobcats with Amari Deardorff hitting for 32 kills and a .439 hitting percentage over both matches while setter Caylin Mahoney gave out 62 assists, but those two received plenty of help on a strong day for Texas State.

In front of 1,839 fans, the Bobcats took on SMU Friday evening. Deardorff hit for 20 kills in the four-set match and finished with a hitting percentage of .471. Mahoney notched her second double-double of the day with 40 assists and 12 digs in the match while libero Sierra Smith wiped the floor for a team high 15 digs.

Three other Bobcats helped out offensively with seven digs apiece for Ashlee Hilbun, Shelby Vas Matt and Alexandra Simms. Simms provided a spark for the Bobcats, hitting her seven kills on 12 attacks with just two errors for a .417 hitting percentage. Every kill she struck seemed to energize the Bobcats. She helped the Bobcats hit .271 as a team for the match while finishing over .300 in sets one and three.

In addition to Simms, Texas State also used plenty of blocks for momentum, outblocking the Mustangs, 11-10. Both Deardorff and Molly Ahrens were in on seven block assists to lead the team.

Texas State's match against Lamar wasn't as closely contested as the Bobcats won the first set, 25-10. Texas State didn't let up there, improving the team's hitting percentage in each set from .320 in the first to .400 in the second and .412 in the third for a .381 percentage against the Cardinals.

Mahoney finished at .667 with six kills on nine attacks. Four more Bobcats finished at .364 or higher against Lamar. Deardorff again led the way for Texas State with 12 kills. Mahoney also double-doubled with 22 assists and 10 digs to lead the team in both categories.

Freshmen Vas Matt and Kelsey Weynand proved the collegiate game isn't too fast for them as they finished Friday with a combined 17 kills in their first collegiate action.

The Bobcats will face Quinnipiac at noon Saturday and then take on Houston, the only other 2-0 team at the Delta Zeta Classic, in the tournament finale at 6:30 p.m. Play opens at 10 a.m. with a match between Lamar and SMU while Quinnipiac and Lamar will play at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
