San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team nearly pulled out a win in its first regular season game under new head coach Danny Kaspar, falling 76-70 to Houston.
Texas State was down 67-55 with 10 minutes to go in the second half, before making a 15-5 run to close it to 72-70. Phil Hawkins hit a left wing three, to cap the run, making it just a one-possession game with 2:07 to go.
Up 73-70 with 22 seconds remaining, Houston's leading scorer Danuel House hit a straight-away three as the shot clock expired to give the Cougars the final 76-70 margin. House finished with 24 points.
The Bobcats got off to a hot start led by sophomore forward Emani Gant who scored six quick points, helping the Bobcats to an 11-6 lead. Gant led with team in the first half, tying Joel Wright with 11 points in the first 20 minutes. Gant and Wright finished with the team-highs in points, scoring 19 and 18 apiece.
Texas State will now face Coach Kaspar's former team, Stephen F. Austin, on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Strahan Coliseum. Tip time is set for 7:00 p.m.
